2  General discussions / General Discussion / Reason for Not posting on: July 13, 2008, 04:28:56 PM
I previously enjoyed posting and getting feedback, primarily the hardware section...then the site seemed to be flooded with spam, User : geebee being one, and now I see User : gusswwhi has taken over.

I did report a few posts to moderators, I didn't really see any correction of the situation, so I let my account go dormant for a while... but its nice to see actual people talking now (Even if its with yourself), so I will give it another go and see what happens...
3  General discussions / General Discussion / Need help on ME login! on: March 09, 2008, 04:32:31 PM
Try deleting all the *.pwd files found on the machine, and restarting, when asked for a new password on the first restart, just press enter.

WARNING...Deleting the PWD file deletes all passwords held by windows, including dialup, etc
4  General discussions / General Discussion / slow internet speed on: January 07, 2008, 04:42:33 PM
Start with the basics, remove the HDD from the machine and scan for Viruses and Spyware/Adware from a clean machine.

Change the Network Card.

Try rebuild the Winsock using the netsh winsock reset, flush the DNS with ipconfig /flushdns

Really need a bit more info though, internet can be slow at times.
5  General discussions / Programming Forum / Will preloading solve this? on: December 24, 2007, 06:54:51 AM
Based on the sample site you are refering to, the best bet would be a filmstrip thumbnail view in the lower segment of the page, you could also look at doing a slideshow view, using a gif animator (Namo works well).

You could use a fixed thumbnail view for each section, and only load once and then target your viewer frame for the changes.
6  General discussions / Hardware / OfficeJet 6210 on: December 24, 2007, 06:47:27 AM
Start by replacing the cartridges, if they dont move, they arn't initializing, and could be faulty.

Also have a look at the encoder strip and make sure it isn't covered with spilled ink.

Safest bet is get it into an autherized HP service centre and let them service and troubleshoot for you.

Spring for a new set of speakers, you will be amazed at the price drop, and the quality increase these days.
8  General discussions / Hardware / What type of hardware should I purchase? on: December 16, 2007, 06:19:28 PM
Contact a local IT company and let them custom build a unit for you, from the sounds of it maybe a Quad processor, with about 8Gb of memory, 512Mb Video card, and a decent SATA Hard Drive, maybe a 540Gb.

Standard builds from suppliers are ok, but for custom work, you deffo need a custom build.
9  General discussions / Hardware / New Laptop? on: December 16, 2007, 06:16:25 PM
I view laptops as essentially yuppie toy's, so select one with the longest warranty, and most bell's and whistles for your money.

Avoid Vista if possible, or dump it before trying to use the laptop.
10  General discussions / General Discussion / Sharing folders.. and hiding them! on: December 16, 2007, 06:13:10 PM
Most users are sheep, map directly to the folder you want her to use, and tell her thats the only info she can access. Warn her that if she browses anywere else it gets logged.

In short, use kiddology, most usesrs will be too scared to do anything but what you have shown them.
11  General discussions / General Discussion / Ghost vs Acronis on: December 16, 2007, 06:08:54 PM
Used both, Acronis works better.
12  General discussions / General Discussion / Recovery disk on: December 16, 2007, 06:06:20 PM
Have a look at Acronis Disk Manager, works really well with Images, and also has an auto-boot already configured. Also ace for doing HDD upgrades.

And priced a $49,00 its a great app for any tech.

Hi there

If there is no "server" as such, I think the way to go would be ensuring all shares are password driven on all Staff machines.

A trick (I have not tried it, but it should work) is in your hosts file on the clients machines, allocate an abitory value for the staff workgroup, make od something really silly like for \\staff

You should also be able to use TweakUI to limit client access to the network neighbourhood.
14  Microsoft (MCSE, MCSD, MOUS, MCAD) / Server 2003 / More info on: May 13, 2007, 05:45:42 PM
Based on what ur asking, the quick answer would be, authenticating the log-in's on the W2K3 server, during log-on on the workstations (ie. Using a Domain and logging onto that) however the user profiles on the machines might go screwy.

A work-around might to allocating permissions to everyone (Including Guests), access to the printer.
15  General discussions / General Discussion / Common Issues on: May 13, 2007, 05:39:15 PM
Hi There

Try taking out all additional cards, leaving just Video and Mem (Obviously dont include On-board).

If that dont work, try replacing memory module.

Could also be an issue with reading the CD in the drive, try an alternate CD or Drive.

Good luck.
PS. if it gives a error, post that too, might be something specific.
