1  Microsoft (MCSE, MCSD, MOUS, MCAD) / Server 2003 / Passed 70-296 today... on: December 02, 2006, 04:26:12 PM
Got a 900. I last took this test in October 2003 and failed (after that I took a break to finish my degree), so I can't say if it got harder or not since the intro. I passed 70-292 back then rather easily, so finally I have my MCSE 2003.

Most of the questions were well represented in the various practice tests out there.

I've done server work (admin and consultant, over 20 new/upgrade domain installs as well) and the following parts were the most "foreign" to me:

Domain trust scenarios.

DNS issues, cross trust or unix interoperability.

FSMO role placement and globat cat placement particularly over a WAN.

Most of the other questions were reasonable if you have deployed/admin'ed domains for awhile. Just take your time and go over the whole thing at least twice. I had only 15 mins left when I was done.

These notes were helpful:

Onward to MCSE +Security (already have a Security+).

6  Novell / CNE / Oops.... typo.... on: January 19, 2002, 02:53:42 PM
I said CNE... I meant CNA....

Gotta learn to walk before I can run.

7  Novell / CNE / Starting my Novell studies.... need opinions.... on: January 19, 2002, 02:50:21 PM
I have done a LITTLE Novell admin work and of course a good bit of client side stuff but as far as I am concerned I'm pretty green.

My plan (so far) is to study Netware 5.1. I have the Novell Clarke book on the way and I already have my SmartForce CBT's for 5.1 that I got from work.

I am studying it for a couple of reasons. First of all a LOT of people still use Novell (duh) and as someone who dreams of bigger and better jobs many employers want a CNE in addition to a MCSE. I was ready to start my CCNP but here in NE Ohio the are about 20 times more jobs that want Novell experience than those who want Cisco people.

I have no problem with that. To tell you the truth I look forward to something different and Novell looks like fun. (I know, sounds strange!) Novell also looks like a really stable server OS that is certainly a lot easier to learn than Linux! (I tried reading my Linux+ book but it BORES ME TO HELL)

ANYWAY!! (sorry to drone on) I need to know how I should proceed for my exams (bearing in mind I don't pay for them, read on)

Should I:

Take the 5.1 Admin exam (61 questions right?)

Take the 5.0 Admin exam (Adaptive) THEN Take the 5.1 Update Exam.

What is the recommended path? I don't mind taking 2 exams and I wondered if it is easier to take 5 and the 5.1 update rather than taking the 5.1 exam. I think it would be nice to have the 2 certs (5.0, 5.1) but just wondered what the experts around here think.

8  Other IT certifications / Citrix CCA, CCEA / Passed MetaFrame 1.8 today.... on: January 18, 2002, 12:20:22 AM
I decided Monday to get this thing out of the way.

Spent 4 days reading over the admin manual for the server and the client (you can download these from Citrix).

Test is easily passable if you read those 2 items and search around for some basic practice questions. I am not proud of the score that I got but hey I passed!

Make sure you know all aspects of the material. I bombed 2 sections of the test that I admit I wasn't as worried about as the others.

BTW passing score was a 68 if anyone wondered.

9  Microsoft (MCSE, MCSD, MOUS, MCAD) / 70-219 / Passed 861 w/ a nasty flu..... now a MCSE.... on: September 26, 2001, 09:10:59 AM
I pleaded to reschedule (I wasn't sick till the morning of the test) but they wouldn't do it.

Oddly enough this is my 3rd design exam and I got my highest score on this one. I came home and just now woke up (17 hours later).

Took me just over 2 hours.... no new case studies, still the ones that come up on the many practice exams out there.

Overall I am just happy to get my last exam done. I was tired of seeing jobs requiring the MCSE cert (while Cisco has been my interest) so I figured I would sidetrack (took me 6 weeks to take 7 exams) and get the MCSE done. I knew much of the subject matter (well maybe not Network Intrastructure) already it was just a matter of going over material again and preparing for the actual test.

Thanks again group. The lurking I did here proved invaluable.

Oh, why was I nuts and took all 3 design exams? Well, to learn anything about the other electives would require me to study completely new material and it would take me longer to pass. I have now experience with SQL server or ISA server and a little with Exchange server and proxy server. It would take me weeks to prepare for just 1 of those exams. I took the "easy" way out in taking tests concerning material I was already quite knowledgeable about.

later all, 2 months break (my wife is pleading me to have a normal life again for a few weeks) and back to Cisco.

10  Microsoft (MCSE, MCSD, MOUS, MCAD) / 70-220 / Congrats.... on: September 20, 2001, 09:59:58 PM
I sat this one same day as you and hit the same score.... spooky.

I myself will be resuming my CCNP studies  after next week (when I pass 219)

Good luck to us both.

11  Microsoft (MCSE, MCSD, MOUS, MCAD) / 70-220 / 851 today, 2.25 hours...... 1 more to go..... on: September 20, 2001, 07:01:00 PM
I miss Network design! (took it on Monday!)

This exam was difficult and (in my opinion) was more difficult than 221 (designing a network).

I would say half the credit on the test was earned with "gimmes" (whereas I though 65-75% of 221 was "gimmes")

Anyway thanks again all.

Thanks in advance Gareth for what will certainly be another congrats  Wink  .

Oh, and to the person last week who asked how I passed 221 in 1 hour? (ok, I admit 75 minutes) I don't know what to tell you. Often times eliminating the obviously wrong answers (221 has a lot of them) is the key.
12  Microsoft (MCSE, MCSD, MOUS, MCAD) / 70-221 / Another one bites the dust... 846... Well prepared.... on: September 17, 2001, 04:38:19 PM
Luckily, the case studies have not changed yet.

This is good because it means that my practice exams (transcender, etc) still applied in preparing me.

Got an 846 in an hour. I could have spent the time to go back and perfect my answers but I really didn't care as I knew I had passed.

Good luck to all!

I take ISA Server on Wednesday and Migrating from NT4 on Thursday and that is all of them!

Thanks again to the board. My lurking is paying off....

13  Microsoft (MCSE, MCSD, MOUS, MCAD) / 70-217 / Passed my last Core 4 (217) today - 813 - Not bad.... on: September 12, 2001, 05:51:28 PM
I was pretty much ready, a few drag and drops I hadn't seen examples of before other than that I pretty much nailed it.

I have my Core Design (Network Infra) monday... now that will be fun!

Good luck to all, if you did Infra before this one it will be a breeze....

Usual sources, Microsoft Core Study books, ExamCram, transcender, etc....

14  Microsoft (MCSE, MCSD, MOUS, MCAD) / 70-216 / UGH! Passed with 720.... NOTE TO TRANSCENDER/BOSON/ETC USERS!!! on: September 05, 2001, 06:20:16 PM
If you use Transcenders/Boson/etc as a meaure of preparedness be forewarned!

I sat 216 today and saw roughly 20 percent NEW QUESTIONS.

Now, I say be warned because I was scoring 95% plus on practice exams. I have read the MS Press book, I do have a fair amount of experience BUT I was thrown a few curveballs with this one.

If you know the material like it is second nature go in and pass, you will. If you really depend of the (cough)practice(cough) exams you better wait a few weeks and update them.

But again, all this is my opinion.

Good luck to all, I am onto AD!

Thanks again

15  Microsoft (MCSE, MCSD, MOUS, MCAD) / 70-215 / Scored a 920 tonight, good test! on: August 30, 2001, 09:11:08 PM
I feel like I really accomplished something on this one.

I can't figure out why I scored a 740 last week on 70-210 and I turned around and kill that score on this exam.

Oh well

Good luck to all, on to Infrastructure!
