1  Microsoft (MCSE, MCSD, MOUS, MCAD) / 70-210 / Syngress/Osborne book question on: January 12, 2002, 03:05:22 PM
Thaks for the tip on Syngress. Well, I have a number of resources, but they seem to give alot of screen shots which helps a bit too.

I also have a test lab and Transcenders as well as the entire Server resource kit, but that is not exactly light reading, lol!

I think the problem is, that there is too much info out there and it is hard to find which is reliable and which is a waste of time!

I think that for the NT track there were some books that were excellent. For Win2K they all seem to be lacking in some way or another. Oh well.

Thanks again, good luck on the 16th!
2  Microsoft (MCSE, MCSD, MOUS, MCAD) / 70-210 / Syngress/Osborne book question on: January 11, 2002, 02:53:04 AM
Ok thanks guys for the comments, however from what I have seen in the past of the MOC and the MS training kits, they also leave alot to be desired. As in, there are many gaps that they do not cover and you are tested on.

I wish I had the time to read the entire server resource kit. That would probably be the best resource all 7200 pages of it!

Well, anyway thanks for the comments. Actually, I like Alan Carter's writing style, but his book for Win 2K is not as good as his NT4 book. I think that it is too weak in Network Infrastructure and  Active Directory.

Too bad because I like his approach of learning  it all as a continuing process not one exam at a time idea.

Thanks again.Wink
3  Microsoft (MCSE, MCSD, MOUS, MCAD) / 70-215 / Service Pack Question on: January 10, 2002, 04:01:02 AM
No have not checked about the patches yet. Since this is mostly a lab/study server, I have been trying to see if I can work through the problem and god forbid maybe learn something at the same time!

If I keep runnning into a brick wall. I might have to end up calling MS.

Anyway, thanks for the suggestions, I will keep you posted!;)
4  Microsoft (MCSE, MCSD, MOUS, MCAD) / 70-210 / Syngress/Osborne book question on: January 10, 2002, 03:16:38 AM
Thanks for the response. Well actually I was more referring to their study guides and not the practice test books. I heard that those were so so.

Anyway, thanks for the comments, maybe someone else will jump in.

By the way do you mean the actual MOC ie:loose leaf notebook style from CTEC classes, or just the MS self study training kits?

Thanks again...Wink
5  Microsoft (MCSE, MCSD, MOUS, MCAD) / 70-215 / Service Pack Question on: January 10, 2002, 12:47:17 AM
Well, then service pack 2 I have has a problem with it. When I install it my server locks up. So, I wanted to try sp1 first and then install a 2 on top to see if it made any difference.

I installed the SP1 I have now with no problems. However, the sp2 still locks up the server.

Hope that makes sense. Thanks
6  Microsoft (MCSE, MCSD, MOUS, MCAD) / 70-210 / Syngress/Osborne book question on: January 09, 2002, 05:10:23 PM

I was wondering in general, what do people on here feel about the Osborne/Syngress series of books for Win2K?

I have read varied reviews and was wondering. Some have said that Pro and Server have too many errors etc. Is there any consensus? Just curious. Thanks

7  Microsoft (MCSE, MCSD, MOUS, MCAD) / 70-215 / Service Pack Question on: January 09, 2002, 04:27:51 PM
Hi all,

Does anyone know if the Sevice Pack 1 copy that comes in the Server Resource kit conatins all the files? I though that I read somewhere that it was not a complete install.

I can't see why that would be, unless they were referring to the fact that it is designed for a network install and might not contain all the various other configurations available.

Any thoughts? Thanks;)
8  Microsoft (MCSE, MCSD, MOUS, MCAD) / 70-215 / Service Pack Problem on: January 07, 2002, 09:31:15 PM
Thanks for the tip. I will give that a shot. Of course with a dial-up connection, it might take until SP4 is released to download it! lol.

Maybe I will see if I can find one locally first. I hope that this does solve the problem, because it sure beats me.

Server works great before the upgrade then the pack says it installs fine. Then it doesn't work anymore!

Go figure. Thanks again..
9  Microsoft (MCSE, MCSD, MOUS, MCAD) / 70-215 / Service Pack Problem on: January 07, 2002, 06:00:24 PM
Thanks guys for the response. Well, I tried safe mode and LKGC, but didn't help. However, I was thinking the same thing about installing service pack 1 first and see what happens. Unfortunately, I only have a copy of service pack 2.

So, unless I can latch on to one, I will have to try to find a plan B. Any other ideas?

10  Microsoft (MCSE, MCSD, MOUS, MCAD) / 70-215 / Service Pack Problem on: January 06, 2002, 09:09:23 PM
Hi All,

I have a problem and I thought someone might be able to supply some input. I have a DC server that I have installed service pack 2 on. It tells me that the service pack was installed correctly. However, after the initial reboot the machine locks up during the Win 2K server splash screen. I have tried to reinstall and the result is the same.

Anyone have any ideas on this? I am running the first version of server(no service packs installed).

Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
11  Microsoft (MCSE, MCSD, MOUS, MCAD) / 70-240 / The Best Book? on: January 04, 2002, 03:44:35 AM
Hey great! Just out of curiosity, what did you think of the Osborne accelerated text?

I think that one of the problems with studying for all these exams is, there is sooo much info out there, but hard to tell which ones are reliable and useful. So many have errors etc.

Seemed like there were more reliable sources out there for the NT4 track at least as far as texts went. Of course hands on experience always applies too.

Yea CCNA is nice too. I plan to hit that after I am finished getting up to spedd on Win2K.

Anyway, good luck with whatever is next.Smiley
12  Microsoft (MCSE, MCSD, MOUS, MCAD) / 70-240 / The Best Book? on: January 02, 2002, 02:52:01 AM
Hey congrats

So, what did you finally decide to use to study after all the "helpful" suggestions?

Obviously whatever it was worked well!

Wow MCSE NT4 in 14 days? What did you use to study for that one?

Good luck on the next one!:)
13  Microsoft (MCSE, MCSD, MOUS, MCAD) / 70-240 / I am taking the dive tomorrow as well on: December 12, 2001, 11:52:20 PM
Hey good luck man! Get a good niight's sleep, if possible. We will send positive vibes your way.

I am trying to slug away at this one too. However, starting to look like will not be able to put it all together in time!

Not to mention a scheduling screwup.

Good Luck!:)
14  Microsoft (MCSE, MCSD, MOUS, MCAD) / 70-240 / Expiration of Exam on: December 11, 2001, 03:31:41 PM
Hey people. I saw a post somewhere yesterday, where apparently the person spoke with MS about this.

They told him, that the exam will not expire on Dec. 31, 2001, but the voucher will. However, you cannot take the exam without the voucher.

So you try to figure it out! Sure beats me. Sounds like some of their policies are as convoluted as their questions.Sad
15  Microsoft (MCSE, MCSD, MOUS, MCAD) / 70-240 / Well Here I GO on: December 09, 2001, 04:12:47 PM

I am nervously preparing for this one too. Anyway, good luck tomorrow. We will be hoping for your success!:D
