1  Cisco / CCNA / Does this sound like a good idea? on: May 18, 2005, 08:27:59 PM
Ive had my CCNA for over a year now and I haven't gotten one step closer to getting a job where I actually use it. Granted I'm currently employed in IT as a technician, but I still don't have any real world Cisco exp. I was wondering would going for my CCNP help me in being able to get a job working with cisco equipment, or will employers see it more like "wow u have ur ccnp, but no real exp? NEXT"?

I considering investing some money in the near future on a ccnp lab, but id like to make sure im not blowing possibly thousands of dollars when it wont help me with my venture.

thanks in advance

3  Microsoft (MCSE, MCSD, MOUS, MCAD) / 70-215 / About to take 70-215, advice needed on: January 24, 2005, 03:49:31 AM
I'm about to take the 70-215 in soon, and I'd like some last minutes tips and hints on what I should concentrate on. I took and passed the 70-270, and it seems like a lot of the material will be carried over. I used the Preplogic 70-215 book along with some CBT Nuggets, and I feel confident. also, I did a few practice exams and did ok on them. It doesn't seem like a hard exam, but I don't know if Microsoft is gonna throw me a curve ball.

Thanks for any info, I appreciate it.
4  Cisco / CCNA / parts for lab on: August 19, 2004, 03:54:08 AM
im tryin to put together a lab so i can get used to using cisco routers and switches. sadly even tho i have my ccna, ive never seen a cisco router/switch in real life, much less used one (unless u count using the r1r2 telnet router). anyways i need some advice on what to buy. i wanna buy a 2501 and 2 1924's, but im confused bout how i would set it up in my lab. i was gonna go cable modem -> 2501 -> 2x1924. the problem with this is that the 2501 only has one ethernet interface, so i wouldnt be able to plug it into the switch (am i thinkin bout this right or am i missin something?). i was thinkin about getting the 2514 cause it has 2 eth ports, but it's more expensive.

im sorry if im not makin 2 much sense but its late and im spacin out.

thanks for any help
5  General discussions / General Discussion / should i change my major? on: July 14, 2004, 01:30:47 AM
i have no problem with learning new things all the time. i actually like learning something new, especially if it's somewhat's very rewarding to me. my only concern is after i graduate college will i still be unable to get a job? im no expert in job statistics, but it seems like it's almost impossible nowadays even with a degree and exp; plus there's already tons of overly qualified people it seems.
6  General discussions / General Discussion / should i change my major? on: July 13, 2004, 09:47:43 PM
hey everyone, im currently enrolled in the University of Cincinnati as a IT major and was wondering if a career in IT should be something i continue to pursue. the reason im asking is i keep hearing of more and more "professionals" who can't seem to find work. I'm not sure if any of them have degrees or certs, but they supposedly have 5+ yrs of experience in various fields. i have a couple certs (nothing special) and like i said im workin on my BS degree, but should I cut my losses and try to make a carerr in business management or something? I love computers like anyone else, and it would be a dream to work with technology, but the reason for spending all that money on a education and getting a degree is to be able to have a stable, promising career one day, at least in my opinion. i mean i don't want to have a bachelors and still have to work my XXX off just to get a damn interview. ive been actively searching for a job in IT since Jan of this year, and I haven't even gotten a callback or an e-mail response (except for the automated ones). I know the economy's bad, and the situation in iraq ain't helping any, but Im starting to think maybe there's 2 few jobs for 2 many people.

one of the reasons why i think i cant get a job in IT, is cause i only have 3 months of acutal work experience in this field. basically what i wanna know is, if i do graduate with a bachelors, and have a few certs, and about 2 years experience (my school has co-oping), will i be able to have a career in IT when im done, or will i have to keep working at target trying to pay off my student loans?

i know this post is kinda long winded, but id really appreciate some feedback. thanks
7  Novell / CNE / why novell? on: June 29, 2004, 09:21:30 PM
Do u think the cna is actually worth getting though?
8  Novell / CNE / why novell? on: June 28, 2004, 11:14:02 PM
i just got finished studying for the windows server 2000 exam, but dont have the money to take it now and wanted to start on the cna on netware 6 book i have and began and now i have a question...does anyone even use novell anymore? i guess it would be good to have the knowledge to use netware servers and it'd be a nice resume filler, but is netware being used in companies nowadays? i know usually its a toss up between linux and microsoft for servers, but i havent heard or seen anything about novell. will studying for and passing the exam be a waste of time and money (other than a resume filler) or does netware have some sort of base out there?

What other study material if any did you use?

examforce is like preplogic. they ask questions and u answer em. it's designed to target after ur weak areas so ull become stonger at them, they have a bretty big question pool, so itll be hard to get in the habit of just remembering that #1 is A #2 is B, etc. the explanations were really good too. they were long and detailed. ive never used testking or actualtests b4 (i think it's cheating, but thats just me), so i dont know if its a comparison. i used the sybex 70-270 book, free practice tests i found on the web, the qod questions i saved in my inbox, and cbt nuggets. cbt helped me a lot, i crammed b4 the exam with cbt, and a bunch of the IE security questions i had just gone over that morning were on the test. the funny part is they asked me a question on the exam that i had no clue on what the answer was, then yesterday the EXACT same problem came up while using my computer, it was freaky.

glad i passed tho, now its onto 70-215 (or maybe CNA)

14  General discussions / General Discussion / thoughts on transcenders/testking on: June 06, 2004, 03:22:38 AM
is transcenders or testking braindumps? ive never used them before but im not sure if they're study aids, or just a way to cheat. ppl on the seem to have mixed opinions and was wondering what the majority thinks

15  Microsoft (MCSE, MCSD, MOUS, MCAD) / 70-215 / dual booting on: June 06, 2004, 03:18:19 AM
currently i only have one pc. i want to  install win2k server onto it, but still be able to use win xp pro. i have a 80gb hdd, and was thinking of using an ntfs resizer to split the current 80gb C: drive in 2, then format the space as D: and install win2k server on that. would this be a good idea or is it better to just install 2k server to the winnt folder on C: and dual boot that way?
