well if you read the posts, freak said they are still doing the V3 exam which means the book you can buy off amazon will be enough for the exam.  you can also try ebay.  every now and then people will sell their materials from a training class.  i havent heard of any electronic copies that could be getting distro'd around.  you can pick the book up cheap. you might as well do that.

so can you recommend any books we can purchase that cover the new material?

for the v3 exam all i needed was the official book i bought off amazon.  does hacking exposed cover everything? arguably  yes, but it doesnt group the material in the same way EC-Council does.  so its "easier" to use the crappy book, chances are you wont open it again after you pass the exam though.  For V4, i dont know, Freak took the exam did you take v4 or v3?  i would like to know what books people think cover the pen-testing part appropriately for the exam.

i would agree with that as well.  if you want to do pen-testing reading those 2 books are pretty much a "must do"
5  Microsoft (MCSE, MCSD, MOUS, MCAD) / Server 2003 / 70-290 on: April 04, 2005, 01:08:43 PM
well i would follow what the MS press labs have you do. for 70-290... mostly you set up a 2003 server as the DC create accounts edit accounts things like that, terminal services, remote desktop, etx.  70-291 will have you setting up the DNS, DHCP, VPN servers and the like.  The server 2003 MS press books i have been pretty happy with so far.  I am currently studying for 70-291 and havent needed more than 2 computers (2003 DC & XP client) so far.
it would be good since you have 3 computers to use one for googling and what not and the other 2 for your lab since you will be changing IP addresses and doing things that might make life difficult if you are using your working computer as your client PC.  its doable of course though.

hope that is a little more helpful for you.

7  CompTIA / A+ forum / Is there a time limit to take both parts? on: April 02, 2005, 08:54:36 PM
i took both my tests the same day.  i took the hardware one first which was the harder of the two in my opinion.  My test guy was cool and said if i failed the first one he wouldnt make me take the next one and would just give me a voucher to come back.  I passed both by the way...

A+ is extremely important as a building block for your computer knowledge.  You arent going to get a 100k a year job with it but it will help you understand how a computer works and how to work on them.  That is crucial knowledge to anyone who wants to make a career out of IT.

i wish my job would send me to hacking course involuntarily, that would be awesome.  i might work a little harder at work if they forced me to horrible stuff like learning...

also looking back at the original question OPST is still gonna cost you a couple thousand for the training, that's no real savings over SANS

you are probably out of luck, you can try getdataback but if you get a non-quick format its probably gone.
11  Other IT certifications / All other certifications / CEH questions on: April 02, 2005, 08:24:58 PM
The book you can buy from amazon will cover everything in the v3 materials. Its ok, there are issues with the book. if you read the other topics on this you can read all about them, but the book did cover every question i saw on the exam. The new objectives just add an actual pen-testing block, which was really needed.  Given the fact that you have detailed objectives for the new material you can probably find other resources if you cant get your hands on the new materials.  A good book that comes to mind is Gray-Hat Hacking.  I would also check out the OSTMM for a methodology they should be following.  There are plenty of articles on pen-testing and i cant imagine they will be adding too many more questions, but havent heard anything else about it.

you should have gotten a paper with your results telling you what to work on and what you did well in.
