1  General discussions / General Discussion / Re: Installing IE5.5 sp2 on: April 07, 2017, 02:21:41 PM
Just resolved this.  Booting to safe mode let me run the install.  Not sure what the issue was.  Fortunately the user was pretty patient.
2  Microsoft (MCSE, MCSD, MOUS, MCAD) / Windows XP exams / Re: Remote Assistance on: April 07, 2017, 02:17:48 PM
Not sure that really answered my question.  I mainly work with virtual environments now.  This makes it easy to shadow a user's session and provide assistance without having to by physically at the location.

Could be a slow to load PC

4  General discussions / General Discussion / Re: Microsoft Windows 10 .. Will it be a success like it's predecessor Windows 7? on: April 07, 2017, 01:42:13 PM
I'm a fan except for the forced updates.  I don't trust Microsoft to not break things.

I used to post some back in the day.  When I first started in IT, I was in a cubicle where others were walking by all the time.  I used to come on here when I had nothing else to do, so that if anyone questioned why I was browsing the internet, I could tell them I was researching for my certification exams.

Sounds like maybe a failed hard drive.

Currently using an XPS 13.  Really liking it.  Small but still powerful.

If no, what do you do now?

I used to post on here some back in the early 2000s when I was first getting into IT and cared about certifications.  I was in a cubical at the time, with people always walking by, and this was one of the few websites that I could go on (since it was work related) to pass the time when things were slow.

I wish the search function was working.  I'd really like to see what I was talking about 10 years ago!

I didn't even know the site had been down.  The last time I logged in was 2008!

I just want to say thanks for starting this site Dimitri!  Back when I was just starting out in IT (2001) this site was a big help and great source of information.  It looks like it is pretty much dead now; too bad.

You seem to be under the mistaken impression that "personal computer" is the role of a computer, but that is untrue.  PC is the term we used to use for "IBM compatible PC", which today means any Intel-based computer.  It's a physical description of the machine.

If you disagree, answer me this...  Is a Macintosh desktop computer a PC?

You are correct that the term ‘«£PC‘«ō refers to an IBM compatible personnel computer and not a Macintosh.  However, it still refers to a personnel computer, a term I would not use to describe a server.

All in all, an argument could probably be made for either side and unless you can point me to a link that defines PC as ‘«£all Intel based computers‘«ō, we should probably agree to disagree.
