Don't know what exam to go for next. Any suggestions???

Good job!

What's next? well, what about the design test... 70-221 ...

Well, it's the first challenge

It's General trading company with Head office in Dubai-UAE and a branch office in China; I am the only IT professional.
The Head office is now still small (which "God willing" will expand in future, which give me more responsibility and I hope more money) Wink :  20 Windows 2000/XP workstations and just one Server 2003, they are still in a Workgroup environment, connected to the Internet using 56 kbps dialup connection.

The owner needs an internal e-mail system and database software, the Internet connection will be changed to a broadband Internet connection something like 256 kbps or 512 kbps DSL, and (my suggestion) VPN connection to the Branch office in China and later to other branch offices when applicable, group policy will be applied.

They also need a suitable firewall.

Please your opinion and how to start.

Thank you

Hi Adam.

Its a long time since i "saw" you last time. BTW, congrats in your new job.

Well, i've been following you since your 1st posting, so i'm sure you can do a good work; you do not need to hire an external consultant, i think, 'cause you are not an MCSE paper guy. Hey, you're a real MCSE and CCNA professional!

My advices:

1.SetUp main office's LAN as usual. Choose IP in privates ranges (of course). Draw on paper your DNS and AD design (BEFORE install or configure servers. This will save you a lot of time)
2.If you have just 1 server, install NAT on it. You must install a firewall also. If you have not enought money at 1st, you could use software firewall, like Black Ice or Zone Alarm (i prefer the last one)
3. You should create 2 sites with 1 domain. This will help AD replication. Remember your 70-217 studies, Cheesy
4.Put your database on RAID5. This is something that still nobody have said and its a very important topic. Create and design a good BackUp strategy.

Mmmm, what else...ahh, of course, use IPsec for the VPN if you can. Its better and more secure.

I am taking the exams during a weeks training, so i will have a couple of days with a microsoft tutor before taking each one, i was hoping that this would be good revision time before going for it. The problem i have is that i am so busy at work for the last year, the studying has been really drawn out and i just want to get them out of the way! I am gonna spend the next week revising solidly, playing with my test network and going through practices, so hopefully i will be ok!

Good luck with your re-take,

A tutor is a great help.

I wanna recommend you re-read these topics anyway:

For 216: DNS, DHCP and RRAS (specially 1st)
For 217: GPO, and Sites issues.

Remember that DNS makes overlapping in both test, so if you study well for this one, you're killing 2 birds with just one stone.

Final tip: know well how repair/backup/restore DHCP and WINS databases. Cheesy

PS: i recieved strange questions regarding CA. So, read about Certificates too.

Finally got round to bboking my 70-217 and 70-216 exams, got them in about a weeks time!
Any last minute advice from anyone, have heard they are both pretty tough cookies, have been studying for quite a while now though, and have plenty of hands on with Win2k, Just crossing my fingers and hoping for the best!

I gave to you my 70-216 and 70-217's impressions in the 216's forum. Anyway, i would like to recommend you this book for 70-217 test (is not a study guide, but explains well GPO topics)

... a nice book for job and work tasks also.

(I have a real problem with reading the q's too quickly and missing important info!)
Do you think i am being too ambitious in taking the exams this soon after only getting 75%? I have heard that the transcenders tend to be harder than the real thing though!

I will give to you my opinion, if you don't mind.

I took 217, and i passed. You must know GPO and DNS very well and be ready for a bunch of "sites" and replication issues/questions. But overall, it's a fair test, you can pass if you study well.

70-216, on the other hand, is too wordy. I was undefeated 'till i took this one (a few weeks ago). Questions are tricky and you must know the most obscure options of DNS/DHCP and WINS. Time is not enought, IMO, and the screen size does not help either because you have to  go back and forth in order to read well each questions.

I was like you a few days before test; i mean, i failed Transcender for a few questions or points, and when i come back to check i just had missed because stupids errors or because i misread the questions; this killed me in real test and was my main problem too again. So, my advice is....if you don't feel well or still have not passed Transcender with  flying colors, do not take the 216.

I'm studying again for 216, and i've found that 2 Resource Kit books (the Networking and AD books) have the most obscure DNS/DHCP/WINS options i recieved on real test and Transcender. So, please buy these 2 books if you can and at least, read 'em quickly. I found these for 4 or 5 dollars each; used, of course.

For 70-216 be ready to recieve a bunch of DNS, DHCP and RRAS questions. If you know well, well, very well these 3 topics, i think could be more than enought to pass.

Yes, i think so. Not sure if dead because banned proxies or filtering, but people came and go, see threads, and do not post solutions or comments; just see how many people have seen this post...over 2000 persons. Now, check how many people replied...

It's a shame, and i think is our fault too. We do not use time according and do not exclude some minutes for posting from our working hours.

I asked for PKI and Certificates. Both are Security+ related topics (this is the Security+ forum). This material made overlapping with 70-216 Microsoft test.

Please read before "shoot",

Not sure whats next.  Thinking either 70-210 or 70-222.  This forum has been real quiet lately - lets help each other shall we??

This site have been really quiet, nit just the forum! I could say, too much. But the most curious thing is that persons which visit/see threads increase after you've posted any message. Maybe people loss their "tongues" or fingers.

Congrats for you pass. The road is just starting for you, but keep studying. Best regards,

Well, it looks like you read quite a bit before taking the exam.  Maybe you just didn't digest all the information.  Try reviewing the just the chapters you had trouble with.  Also, check out the Help file in Windows server as it gives a good (sometimes better) explanation of the options and how things work.

That's exactly what i'm doin now. Anyway, i decided to buy 2 resource kit's books and read their CA and RRAS topics (my weakness).

Time was an issue to me, because english is not my native language. I still do not think in english and take more time read all questions and exhibits.

Maybe i take the test again in 1 or 2 weeks...

As for failing, I think you really need to build a real lab to see how things work.  I've never used VMWare so I don't know if it simulates the Windows interfaces exactly.

As for the subnetting questions the formula for calculating required hosts is the same as the formula for calculating required subnets.

70-216 will test you on very minute details of the Windows services.  Make sure you read about subnet prioritization and the round robin option for DNS.

What book did you use for your studies?  I fine the MS Press books are the best.

Thanks for reply,

I used 4 books and Internet resources:

-TCP/IP troubleshooting from Tom Shinder
-Microsoft 70-216 study guide (not much indepht info, did not like it)
-Mastering W2K from Minasi

And about VMWare, yes...VMware let you mount and configurate anything you want. Its like having Servers and PCs, but virtual. You can have from 5 to 20 or 100 PCs and Servers if you have enought RAM in your host.

Where is the people that usually visit this forum, uh? No feedback...nothing! People come and go, see all threads, but leave nothing. Just one year ago, this forum (70-216) and the 70-217 were active and full of life. What's going on?

I found this link. Hope be useful for somebody:
14  CompTIA / Security+ / Which book for Windows 2000 PKI and Certificates on: July 28, 2004, 03:06:29 PM

Can anyone recommend a good book for Windows 2000 Certificates and PKI? Failed 70-216 yesterday and this one was the worst topic for me.

Any suggestion will be very appreciated,

15  Microsoft (MCSE, MCSD, MOUS, MCAD) / 70-216 / Failed my 1st test on: July 28, 2004, 11:04:10 AM
I feel very bad! Yesterday i failed my 70-216 test. Damm! ... I studied a lot, and i must say i work daily with DNS, DHCP and Networking (DHCP was my strongest topic on test). No braimdumps... just practice with VMware, and more practice, but i guess was not enought to pass.

I recieved a BUNCH of RRAS, DHCP and DNS. The DHCP questions were not so bad, but RRAS questions were mixed with IPsec and DNS (a bit confusing).

The CA and Novell topics killed me. Very confusing too. And time was not enought for me, specially if english is not your 1st language (my case). Test was 2 hours and 15 minutes, aprox. Too short. IMO

I recieved a couple of subnetting questions, but asking for required subnets needing a desired number of hosts too (how can i do that? i know how to subnetting using a required number of desired networks... but if somebody wants both? i mean, satisfy the number of subnets and required hosts? ....

Does somebody know a nice Microsoft Whitepaper/link about:

1. CA
2. DNS design (not theory, i already know theory and options. i recieved a lot of questions regarding this. How to minimize replication between WANS...if you must change from Standard Primary to Active Directory, etc)
3.IPsec configuration/issues, but in a Domain, i mean, using policies....
