Title: What have i got myself into!!!
Post by: jbdude2b on August 26, 2004, 01:07:26 AM
Hi Ladies,

How are we all, Im new to the site, and could use all the help I can get.

Due to total frustration of not knowing what was going on when to computer didnt work I enrolled in and completed a cert II in Computer Infrastructure.

I am now doing a Diploma in Network Engineering, and finding it hard(i think i'm out of my depth)to understand subnet and subnet mask.

Please does anyone have a simple example of how I over come this problem, I understand that without a sound understanding of how to work out subnets, mask and broadcasts that it will be impossible for me to coupe with the course.

Any help would be appreciated

Thanks

Jbdude

Hi all,

I'm one of the new ladies to the forum and I know this answer is late, but it might help someone else who is having problem.
I had the same problem with subnetting til I found a free tutorial website with slides, sound and little tests and realized why. The trouble was that I didn't remember my binary math from elementary school. The site I found takes you all the way back to learn the basics, then you build on things from there. After spending literally years not really understanding subnetting, I finally got it within 30 minutes of watching and listening to the lessons.
The site is at http://www.learntosubnet.com/ and is free to all as part of the learn to TCP/IP Education Series. You'll need windows media player.

And no this is not an ad or spam :).

PS - they do charge if you want CIDR, classless and more than one octet lessons, but unless you need those, you will get more than enough info to really understand subnetting from the free area.

Good luck!:p

Thanks for the link, NrthFlaGirl.  I've been requested to tutor a beginning student.  This will probably be helpful.

Hello I am new here as well.  I found this link that may be of some help.

http://www.faqshop.com/misc/default.htm?http://www.faqshop.com/misc/miscarts/sn%20made%20easy.htm

Your not alone in this.  I have completed my A+, Network + and MCP in XP and ready ( or at least going to try) for my 70-270 this next week.  It's just that it's all new to ya, don't give up.

my advise is read several articles on the internet.  Find the one that makes sense to you.  I found that I did the work I needed to do and moved on and you end up going through the same information many times.  Usually the second time over it becomes much clearer.

Anyone do the 70-270 yet and how was it?  It's 50 qustions right?  I heard that you get three hours for it!  Yikes!  Sounds like it's long.
