I have been steadily learning more and advancing in my career, started w/ PC building, Net Ops at an ISP, help desk, now Unix support via telephone, now have a chance to be a jr. Unix admin..
I have always kept good employment record, loyal to the company I'm at, but since I entered the IT field, I have had 4 jobs in the past 3 years, and have not stayed at one more than a whole year "max 9 months" untill I was presented w/ an oppurtunity to advance my skills w/ a different job. I'm worried though that my resume will start to reflect a "job hopper look" I also understand this is common in the IT field when you hit a dead end, and you are motivated to learn, and work and be compinsated for it that you respectfully end the current job and move on.
Is this common among the other profesionals out there??

Yes, some organizations will look at you as a "jobhopper", but you have to show that you are actually advancing your skills. Now that you are a Jr. UNIX Administrator, work up to senior level. Work on some certifications(depending on what version of UNIX, Sun Solaris or HP AIX).

There is a need for UNIX Administrators in the IT market even though it is over shadowed by Microsoft and Cisco. If I were you, I would settle with the Jr. UNIX Administrator position for a while to build up my experience, earn a certification or two, and show any potential employers that I have job stability. Also, if you show your current employer that your really want to stay and work for their company, they'll sweeten your pot so-to-speak.

No confusion intended macaries. He asked a question about jobhopping. He has an opportunity to take an advanced job as a Jr. UNIX Administrator. Reredaing his post and my thread, I believe that I indicated that he go for it, but also warned him for jobhopping after a year or less with an organization. I do not see how that would cause some confusion????
