Getting a job as a DBA
Hello all,
I have been studying for my ocp dba cert and wanted some advice on becoming a dba. I am an oracle apps developer right now, with hopes of getting out of programming and becoming a dba. How hard will it be to get my foot in the door as a dba and what things should I focus on more than others to help make a better transition? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

it will become difficult at first ..
the problem is that the dba exam doesn't provide any relevant experience only theory of partly very sophisticated and rarely used features.
but working as an oracle developer is a quite good start. inform your boss and dba that you are going to make the dba exam. try to support your dba, eg. as vacation replacement, doing backups and so on ..
if this is not possible you have at least some experience as developer under your belt. you can try to get a job as developer/dba in a smaller company where a fulltime dba is not needed.
in bigger environments the dba role is parted. there is the system-admin-dba responsible for business operations (caring for existing databases, user management, backup, recovery, file management, patch installation, user support and so on). good working knowledge of at least two o/s (linux and winnt) is a must. this is the so called junior dba position.
the other role is the system architect who is reponsible for strategic decisions, like database creation and architecture, table and storage design, tuning, .. senior dba's have most time 10+ years working experience with oracle databases in different environments.
in smaller companies these roles are mixed, good for first practise, but database administration is quite different for a -50 users database or 2000+ users databases spread over several countries with 24/7 uptime requirement.
Good luck anyway!
