While reading on RMON, started seeing references to out-of-band management, can someone please explain this a little more?

it mean that the management system/traffic is not a part of the network.

think of your network, if you put another workstation on it just as any other workstations, and use it to manage your critical network devices, then that's in band.

however, if you take that workstation with the management software, connect to a separate connection on the network device, that's out of band... no other device on the network can reach you. (like a station that's directly connected to the console)

in situtation, there may be a whole out of band network. so just imaging each critical device having 2 network interfaces, one the normal one, the other in a different network where only management stations reside. IOS image, configuration backup, SNMP management can occur here completely separete and safe from the normal everyday network.

When they say "out of band management" they're usually talking about management through the console or aux ports.
