Top this (Halon) Story.....

February, 1983. Northern California is going
through a horendous Wet Spell. Mud slides,
lost homes, just terrible, terrible rain rain rain,
24 x 7 it seems.

Live and Work in Cupertino, Cal.
Customer, in Menlo Park, about 15-20 miles North
has a computer problem.

It's my turn to be Tech in Charge, so I get the call at home at 11 PM.
After talking to the guy on the phone, it's determined that the guy needs
to press a button to "reboot" his mini.

He says, : I am paying for service, and I want YOU to come here
and press the button. I am NOT going to press any buttons!"

I don't own a car, but have a nice 750F Honda.

I get on the bike and ride through the chilly, (cold even) Monsoon.

The customer leads me into the computer room.
Just then, as I am explaining what is going on with his
Honeywell GCOS Level-6 mini, the guy "freaks."

Alarms sound.

" Holy &^$ !!! Holy *&% !!, " he says.

Then he runs out of the room.
I am bewildered.

As it turns out, for some (I don't know why) reason,
the Halon system went off. The gas starts to fill the room.
This stuff is poison, and this guy runs off and leaves me there,
like a wet rat, to suffocate on this stuff !!

What a jerk !

Well, I made it out through some other emergency door,
which led to the outside.

Next day, he calls my boss and screams to high heaven how I was in his
computer room, left through an un-authorized "exit," and didn't properly
shut the door behind me.

I tell my boss what happened. He understands.

We both decide an appropriate response
is to press Another_Button:

The button that shifts his modem from 9600 to 2400 bps.....

(Remember, its 1983....)

We both have a good laugh everytime the jerk calls and complains that
things are running too slow......

PS - I now drive a car, a minivan, and a Goldwing.

Halon is not poisonous.

Halong displaces oxygen, starving the fire of life-giving air... it also
starves people of life giving air as well.

It is also insanely expensive.
