Lammle doesn't go to much into "Port Numbers" other than the one in page 113. Looking at the diagram on that page, am i to assume that:
TCP:
ftp 21
telnet 23
Doom 666
UDP
dns 53
tftp 69
pop3 110
news 144
and does that mean the all application in TCP are connection-oriented, and the one in UDP are connectionless. and finally, what is "doom" in TCP and "news" in UDP.
thanks
Rain.

Hi Rain;
That pretty well sums it up with TCP being connection-oriented and UPD being a connectionless protocol. It is explained earlier in the chapter about the characteristics of each of the protocols.
For both TCP and UDP, port numbers are assigned as follows:
a) Numbers below 255 are for public applications (ftp - 21, telnet - 23, smtp - 25, tftp - 69, etc);
b) Numbers from 256 to 1023 are assigned to salable applications (Doom game - 666); and
c) Numbers from 1024 and above are unregulated.
As for news having a port of 144, that port falls in the range of unassigned numbers. I'm not sure if that is referring to a news application, or something else. Maybe someone else can add on to that part.
Hope this helps somewhat;
JerryL

Let me make a correction. I didn't notice when I scanned the list. 114 is AudioNews. I think that is the port Todd was refering to, but you would have to ask him.

I cant beleive that Doom was in that book, that is pretty crazy. I KNOW that wont be on the exam, it's a game that you kill demons and stuff on, hence they got 666 as a port number. When CCNA starts including gaming port numbers, this test will get real hard. lol
