Outsourcing to 3rd World Countries...

What do you think about large Corporations outsourcing their helpdesk, Database and Network Engineers to other countries like India and the Philippines? I know it saves alot of money for the corporations, but its hurting the unemployment rate. I saw very smart and intelligent people get layed off, because their company is having budget problems and they are paying people India about $10.00 an hour to do IT and live like Kings.

I know Microsoft is outsourcing, because I needed help with a personal issue with my machine. (I think there are two modes for Microsoft helpdesk support, 'Personal' and 'Professional' tech support) I had someone in India on the phone, it was like 1PM CDT my time and his time was around 8PM or so. Anyways he didnt have a clue on a solution to the problem, and he didn't feel confident on the phone. All's he did was look up the crappy Knowledge Base and I could of done that on my own. I just dont like what Microsoft and other companies are doing. Its hurting the unemployment rate and I also know programmers that are being layed off as well.

I am almost done with my Computer Science degree, about 2 years left. I have many certs as well and I will never stop learning new technologies, but I just dont know about the IT jobs in this country. I think small to medium sized businesses are the way to go in the time being, large corporations SUCK! I think someone has to do something about this, its hurting the economy and the unemployment rate. People spend about 50K on a degree to get a good or decent job, and in India and the Philippines you dont need a US college degree.. So what do you think?

Angry

It is cheaper for them to outsource or bring in people (I think it is H1-B or something)
Exxon is a good example I have worked for them and I only know of 4 people in there computer division, that is permanent, who is American all the others come from foriegn contries and are paid less to do the same job the americans are.
Honestly I think everyone should write their congressman and stop letting people come in on work visa's for the tech jobs

Thumbs up

So if I move to India, I might be more likely to get an American job? Sounds good! (Being single is great!)

Lightbulb Outsource yourself

Yes, the "big companies" are hurting you when they outsource to Bengali expats for $400 / month working in Agara, but look at it from their point of view. If you could save the cash on salary, and write off a few business trips to Dubai, you might do the same.

So, IT is as IT does. Hop on the internet and find some overseas jobs yourself. There are several companies that hire IT professionals for jobs in Southeast Asia, the middle east, Europe, Africa, South America, Australia, Antarctica...

If you can't find it Out West, then Go East, Young Man, Go East. I've worked in several different countries, and I love the travel experiences. The foreign contact is a big plus. Both will help your resume as well. Also, your salary normally falls into a tax-free status if you work outside Western Europe. Do the math. 60k tax-free-salary easily translates to an 80k taxed-salary.

Bottom line is, if you are halfway experienced, and at least willing to work outside the US and Western Europe, you will find a job.

Well I could take some jobs out of country but being an american kind of limits the safe areas I can work at. I was offered a spot in Nigeria, I would have made 70% more, but I would have had to have an armed escort wherever I go.
I could go to the middle east, but then again being an american there would not be too wise

Taq,

I was in the middle east for a year and a half, and if I had not found something that paid more, I would STILL BE THERE, yes, even with the war going on. Now I work in Bosnia. In Iran, I was treated like gold. No one, not even the Afghanis or Iraqis I met, tried to kill me. Sure, you have people collecting information on you, but so what? I learned Arabic from an Iraqi.

...70% more and you turned it down... can I have that point of contact in Nigeria? And you'd have an Armed Escort! It's not like you would have to shoot anyone, or they would be shooting at you. If your escort element goes down, you just run. Simple.

I am pale-faced as they come, I wear american clothes, I eat american food, listen to american music, yada yada yada. All you have to do is be nice to the people wherever you go, and you can be as american as you want.

You should really call those people back on Nigeria. Or what about Moscow? They always need techs in Russia.

Do it for 6 months. If you don't like it, ask for your job back, or find a new one. You will save so much money and see so many things that your stocks will become insignificant. (And if you are making US money in a 3rd world country, you needn't worry about the US economy).

The outsoursing to countries with cheaper labor has been around long time before the Internet was even invented.

Almost all the major braind name clothing companies manufacture their cloth outside the US, mostly in China.

Most of the computer parts and accessories are made outside of the US.

Just go to any department store and try to find anythig that has a "Made in the USA" label.

Now the Internet has created the opportunities for even small businessess to outsource the programming, web and graphics design to companies in India, China, Russia - anywhere but the US.

The DMCA law as well as other laws has forced thousands of web based and software businessess to relocate outside the US.

This is a global economy. This is just a reality.

This is why the whole IT sector in the US is not growing but instead is shrinking.

Sure, there will always be a need to network admins, engineers, instructors, but as far as programming and software development, I think that the trend of outsourcing will continue to grow.

Only the most educated and talented professionals are able to find jobs in the US now.

We need the next high tech boom in the US. When will it come? What will be the next big thing in hight tech?
