I'm going to revise my answer on this one. For the purposes of the N+
test, the answer is SLIP as Andy suggested. However, like many of these
questions, that's a simplified answer. There is nothing inherent in the
operation of SLIP that ties it to PPP; it's a simple framing protocol
that has no knowledge of the layer three protocol it is carrying. It is
true, however, that it was designed for use with IP, and I am not aware
of other non-IP implementations.
