programs in task manager

I may have missed this in my All-In-One book, but what are the minimum
programs running in task manager (or its equiv) in Win 98? We have several
machine at work that people complain about being slow. I feel it is an
arbitrary measurement determined more by the amount of coffee they've drunk
than any change I could effect, but still I have to 'do something'.

Another question possibly related to slowness, is there any quick and dirty
way to check for spy-ware? I can't tell if its the fault of the network
admin or the ownership, but everyone seems to install whatever the heck they
feel like on their computers. I may be able to free up a few CPU cycles and
perhaps some bandwidth as well by finding and removing (or at least pointing
out) some spy-ware.

Thanks

Did I mention the girl who was complaining of a slow machine, turns out she
was checking for new e-mail once a minute.

The only one you have to have is Explorer, not IE, Explorer.
Thanks for that confusion MS. Anti-virus would be nice too.

Explorer alone is all you need.... One piece of spyware has been showing
up lately with a lot of my customers - aornum. It comes from IWON.com. A
free program, Spybot Search & Destroy, took care of it. You can get it
here:

BulletProofSoft.com also has a nice spyware removal program for $29.

Oh.... and if you come in to work really early and substitute decaf for
regular coffee, everyone will be happy.

Do a search on the web for msconfig "startup items"...that'll give you
a list. Usually, as far as I know, the minimum is Explorer, systray,
and AV software, plus a firewall if you are on the internet and have
no hardware firewall.
