Post No Floppy - No MS Dos Prompt...?

Problem as the above subject line reads!

The computer in question is a TI EXTENSA 600CD laptop.

I have diagnosed the initial problem:

It displays a red box error upon first booting-up, it relates to the Phdisk utility that creates the correct file size for the save to disk feature.

This error can occur after installing additional RAM, indeed memory has been upgraded from 8MB to 16MB(geez lol). Oh and the person that did the memory upgrade did not apply the fix(grr)!

I now know the procedure to apply the fix, butttttt in order to apply said fix I need to enter DOS or Windows(95) mode. Trouble is the machine will not boot-up, nor does it have a floppy drive.

It just throws up the red box window, then states OS not found.

Help wanted A.S.A.P - apply within...

if you can get into the bios you should be able to turn off the save to disk function. Or you could try taking out the memory upgrade, if the laptop then boots you could apply the patch and reinstall the memory.

Can you use a bootable CD, assuming it has a CD drive, then apply the fix.

Thanx for the reply guys...

WPFossil - yes I can get to the BIOS.

andrewbishop - I've not come across anything that allows me to turn off the save to disk function. I had tried taking out the mem upgrade, yet it still did the same damn thing(grr).

BlokWatch - Tried making a bootable CD, transfered files from bootable floppy. It got me so far then just ground to a halt.

As you may be aware Texas Instruments sold off their lappy division to Acer some years back.

Below is the problem I have, also the fix which I managed to unearth from Acer's archives...

Problem:
Why do I get a red box with an error message "Save to disk file not found.
Save to disk feature is disabled. Run Phdisk for information. FILE: create
new. PARTITION: consult manual. Hit any key to exit." when I boot my
notebook?

Resolution:
The red box error relates to the Phdisk utility that creates the correct
file size for the save to disk feature. This error can occur after
installing additional RAM in your Acer/TI notebook. To fix this error
message perform the following procedure. This creates the proper
Save2Dsk.bin file needed to perform Save To Disk.

1. Go to Start, Shutdown, and restart to MS-DOS mode.

2. Type PHDISK /delete /file at the DOS prompt. The system will restart to
Windows 95.

3. Again go to Start, Shutdown, restart to MS-DOS mode.

4. Type PHDISK /create /file. This will create the new file needed to
perform Save To Disk.

How are transferring the files to your CD? Or better said what burning program are you using?

A bootable CD is the greatest, I'd use a Win98 boot disk image to start then add as many utilities as you want to, PHDISK being the first one.

...The bootable CD I believe was made or rather copied across a network by a friend of mine.

You may have a point here BlokWatch, I think he only pulled files across from a bootable floppy. I guess it may be worth copying direct from the source via CD burning software.

Yeah definetly, if don't use Nero already go download the shareware and use it to make yourself up a handful of boot utility disks.

I believe that its possible to put multiple bootable floppys on a CD and create a boot menu for the CD. Example putting Win98 boot disk, Virus Resue disks, Partition Magic, Partition Commander, etc. Basically put your whole collection of boot floppys on one bootable CD. I've been meaning to check into this but have not. I like the idea alot, I believe it is accomplished with the Linux Lilo loader, but unsure. If anyone knows please advise me.

...I quite agree a bootable utility CD could be a possible lifesaver, did try it butttttttt it's possible it could have been faulty!

This old TI laptop belongs to a friend of mine, back in 96 it cost $2200. Geez now in 2003 I'm struggling to fix the darn thing due to lack of floppy drive...LoL

I use NERO and it rocks, trouble is I'm trying to do a few computer repairs whilst here on a constructive holiday here in LA.

Thus all my hardware/software is back home in England(sigh), still where there is a will - there will always be a way...

Oh and not forgetting all the helpful advice found in this here forum.

Later guys...

Yeah, going to need to get ahold of a burner. You can always use a trial of Nero while out of town to get you by. Agreed BTW Nero does rock, nothing else comes close. If you need any files for your boot CD you don't have with you, let me know, I can email or upload em for you whichever. Good luck.
