Hi. After weeks of browsing, I decided to join in.

Does anyone have a easy way of remembering how IPX frame types match their Cisco equivalent, ie, 802.3 = Novel-Ether.

Must remember to book the exam for the end of this month!

Hi Hippo, and welcome to our forum! Always nice to have new bods joining in

Here's a mnemonic I made up. You still have to do the matching, but using this, and performing some writing down makes it heaps easier. Hope it helps:

"Three Two E-Two Snap,TR TR-Snap,F-Snap Two Raw"

Novell name Cisco name

Ethernet_802.3 (Three) Novell-Ether (default)
Ethernet_802.2 (Two) SAP
Ethernet_II (E-Two) ARPA
Ethernet_snap (Snap) SNAP

Token-Ring (TR) SAP (default)
Token-Ring_snap (TR-Snap) SNAP

FDDI_snap (F-Snap) SNAP (default)
FDDI_802.2 (Two) SAP
FDDI_raw (Raw) Novell-FDDI

Cheers,

Deets

Thanks Deets.

I guess since snap = snap-Cisco no matter what the medium, it makes remembering the rest a little easier.

That's right, Hippo. You find that if you can write out the Novell part, the Cisco part is pretty easy to remember. You'll also notice that in each of Ethernet, TR and FDDI, the default encapsulation is the one which is first listed.

Cheers,

Deets
