Ethernet0 is up, line protocol is down

I have just tried setting up my newly aquired 2514 dual ethernet router, I
have 2 brand new LanArt AUI/UTP transceivers.

However when I try plugging my (D-Link) 8 port 10/100 switch into the router
I get the following problem -

The link light on the transceiver is flashing (no link), there is no link
light on the switch, on the router the message is "Ethernet0 is up, line
protocol is down", I can't ping the router port from a PC on the switch.

I have tried different cables, both transceivers on both ports with the same
results. Am I doing something wrong here? Have I missed something obvious?
Do I need to use a crossover or standard cable?

Normal cable. Make sure your transceiver doesn't have an MDI/MDI-X
option (I.e. turns a straight cable into a X-over)

Normal cable to an ordinary port on the hub/switch or to the uplink port (if
there is one)?

Having tried with and without a crossover cable, wouldn't one have worked?
(ie. wouldn't a crossover tranceiver cancel out the crossover cable?)

What are the likely causes of the above message? Is it signifying that it
sees a connection (something plugged in), but no link? or could it be a
config issue? Something I forgot to set up which causes the line not to go
live? (ie. like in a server the link only goes active when the network
driver is loaded and the card activated during boot up).

ahah. fixed. it doesn't like my cheapo 10/100 switch. worked 1st time with
my cheapo 10mb hub once I dug it out of the back of the cupboard and plugged
it in.

Sounds like your switch isn't negotating with the transceiver. Have you
tried plugging a [really] cheap hub? What about a cross over cable into
your PC?

Re: Ethernet0 is up, line protocol is down

Yes, that was the problem, see previous post. However, is the 2514 10/100?
I thought it was just 10mb so that should force my switch into 10mb on that
port. (it's a cheap switch, no way to configure the ports on the switch).
If it is 10/100 what command do I use to set it?

Demon,

The 2500 are only 10 not 10/100 - well, to be honest, it's the transceiver
you should be looking at - I'm sure I've seen a 10/100 one at some point,
but the Cisco is definitely at 10mb. Hence, no command to configure it.

Time to try that nice Catalyst Switch...

Re: Ethernet0 is up, line protocol is down

Fortunately I had ordered a different brand of transceiver yesterday, so it
turned up today. Just tried it and it works now.

The two "LANart" transceivers I had both work fine with el-cheapo hub, but
the new AlliedTelesys works with the switch as well. ho hum. so much for
just being little black boxes then.

Yup, just like the world of microsoft, enterprise servers, SAN's, tape
libraries and all the rest. But, hey, if everything worked we wouldn't get
paid lots of money to sort it all out... 8)
