Whew, I recently just passed 70-229 to obtain my Win2000 MCSE and MCDBA!
It's been a year-long journey and I sure hope this doesn't get retired in
the near future.

I just wanted to say that you CAN do it. It definitely takes dedication and
discipline, but it can be done. I wish everyone the best of luck.

My only remaining question now is whether or not it's worth taking the
70-218 exam for the MCSA (even though I'm now MCSE and MCDBA)? It should be
understood by employers, in my opinion, that MCSE basically encompasses MCSA
and more. I'm really done with these exams and really don't want to take
any more. It was a lot of money and definitely a lot of time. Just wanted
to know your thoughts on taking the MCSA 70-218 exam even though I've
already gotten MCSE.

Oh, about the MCSA, sure, go for it! You can probably get by with some
practice exams and not going through an entire book or class. A lot of the
70-218 seems to be taken from the other MCSE core exams. I just used the
Microsoft Press 70-218 Readiness Review to prepare for it. I have to say
I've come to like the Readiness Review format, I may even say that it's
better than Transcender exams (for Microsoft exams), because the RRs come in
a book format with an exam sim on a CD, and they cost about $30 instead of
$89 for a downloaded Transcender...

Don't take for granted that the hiring people will know that MCSA is a
subset of MCSE skills. Most hiring people don't have a clue what MCSA/MCSE
are or what they do. If the HR people get a request for MCSA then that is
all they will try to fill and MCSE's will be out of luck. I took and passed
the 218 exam after passing 210, 215 and 216 and before taking 217. If you
have a good foundation with the core 4 you should be in good shape. I would
recommend taking it. It also will be a good review for you on the core
technologies.

I got my MCSA first and then finished up with MCSE 2000. I'm working on
MCDBA, CLP, CIW Security, and CCNP. I didn't find the 218 test very hard,
but then I've been at this for over 10 years. Career-wise, I'm doing it to
affirm my experience and expertise. The market is so dead right now
though, that no amount of certifications is going to guarantee you
anything. Good luck!

Hopefully, in between the Trancenders and the MCDBA , you learned how
to format a floppy disk, and locate the recycle bin on your
desktop.
