Braindumps and Bootcamps
I read some pretty stong opinions against braindumps here
recently. What's the diffence between buying a transcender
for practice test questions, and going to a brain dump?
My question is a sincere one.
Secondly, what do you think about bootcamps? I read today
where someone was calling people usless technicians for
using braindumps to pass the test. Do you think the same
thots about people who go to bootcamps, or is that
different?

There's a difference, albeit a small one.
Transcenders, and others like them, do not have exact exam questions, =
although they attempt to simulate the exam as much as possible. If =
nothing else, they help you to understand the exam process. For some =
exams, this is absolutely essential, like the 70-100 exam for the MCSD. =
Most experienced developers would fail this exam because they would =
answer the scenarios their way, but what is expected is the "Microsoft =
way." This Transcender, I'm told from many who took the exam, is =
essential to understanding the "Microsoft way."

It all depends on who is taking the boot camps. If you are already an =
IT professional with experience, lots of experience, I see no problem =
with it. If you're fresh out of college, or high school, with no =
hands-on experience at all, it's not much different than brain-dumping. =
I know I'm going to get some flak on that, but that's my opinion. Even =
the most experienced of IT pros cannot know everything about everything, =
but a strong basis from which to work helps here. Boot camps, at least =
those of any reputable level, do NOT use actual exam questions. If they =
do, they will most likely be found out, and out of business soon. In my =
quest for the MCSD, I would jump in a heartbeat to take an MCSD boot =
camp, if only I could afford the time and money. While I've been a =
programmer for twenty years now, I do not, and can not know everything =
that is required for the MCSD, but I can learn it quickly. In my case, =
I will be tested on several technologies that I have not and probably =
will not use in my current position (of 17 years), but it can't hurt to =
know them. A boot camp would be the most efficient way to accomplish =
this.

Re: braindumps and Bootcamps
There are a lot of different opinions out there. Some people view
Transcenders or other legitimate practice test questions as "cheating" as
well. It really depends upon what your goal is. Are you looking to pass a
test, learn the material or possibly both?
My opinion is that some practice test software is fairly worthless but
practice tests such as Transcenders and others that are similar derive their
real value from the detailed explanations that they give. If you go through
each question, make your best effort at answering and then read the detailed
explanation as to why you are right or wrong, you will learn A LOT from
Transcenders.
Bootcamps are also really a "it depends" type of answer. If you have very
little experience with computers, networking or Windows 2000 then bootcamps
are probably going to be a waste of money to you. If you already have a
good base of knowledge in Windows 2000 and you are looking for something to
put you over the top then bootcamps may be right for you.
In my opinion, bootcamps are definitely not in the same category as
braindumps though.

Re: braindumps and Bootcamps
The same goes with braindumps. You could infact learn a lot from them. Since
they are so erroneous, it could make you look up each answers yourself, and
similar to the spoon-fed transcenders, learn a lot in the process.
All three (bootcamps, transcenders and braindumps) are methods of cramming
for an exam. They do not equate to competence in the workforce. The
difference between them is a very very thin line. Vendors just need to wake
up and implement lab-based exams. Yes I know that costs money. The whole
world is a trade-off.

Re: braindumps and Bootcamps
Thank you for the reply. I appreciate your comments. I
have been in the industry for 6 years, have a very good
job and am working my way thru the MCSE tests. So for me,
it's probably 70% that I just want the cert and 30% I know
I will learn a lot along the way. It is refreshing to
read your thoughtful comments after weeding thru a lot of
name calling and childist remarks.

Re: braindumps and Bootcamps
Thanks Tom,
That has in fact been my experience over the past couple
of years. I have taken a and passed 70-210, 215, and 218
so far. I have used Microsoft Cirriculum, along with
Transcenders, and have taken some study notes off of
braindumps. I don't pay attention to the test questions
there. Since I have learned the material on the job and
over time, the transcenders just help prep me for the test.
I appreciate your reply. Happy Holidays...be safe.

Re: braindumps and Bootcamps
Each person is different so I can't say.........but I know some guys who
took the bootcamp, don't take it at New H******.
I heard lots of complain. Quality of Instructor is less........might be
biggest waste of money.

Re: braindumps and Bootcamps
I think the biggest distinction as to the usefulness of all of these things
(bootcamps, braindumps, etc) is what their being used for. If they're being
used as a study tool, then their value is justified. However if they are
being used as a cramming tool (which they often are) then they are being
devalued as such. If the person studying is using these tools to gain a
deeper understanding of the technologies at work and how they interact with
other services/computers, then I think they can all benefit the student,
unfortunately many of these can also be abused by those always looking for a
quick way out. We'd all like to think that these people will be weeded out
over time as their competence shows it's face someday.
That short version of this long post comes down to, "You get out what you
put in." Use these services responsibly and you'll be able to learn what
you need to to gain enough proficiency to pass the intended exams.
