Iraq shoots down UAV
Do you all think this just gives the US the justification it has been looking for? Or, do you think that we'll just continue the buildup and attack as planned after Christmas? What's even stranger, is that the Iraqi's used an aircraft to do the shooting, rather than a missle or AA gun.

Nope, I think they have shot down 3 this year. And they shoot at our planes almost every day as they dont recognise the no fly zones. This is no escalation.
I think we want a little more justification then this.

Yes, I agree with you that they have been shooting at us constantly over the past 11 years, this marks an occasion that has never happened before. The Iraqis using an aircraft to shoot down one of ours. Especially with what has been happening over there recently with the weapons inspections. Maybe I should have restated my question to, "do you think the latest escalation of the plane being shot down will move up the timeline for response?"

quote: the Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Richard Myers, said the drone was "fired on by aircraft and is assumed lost".
"I don't see it as an escalation," he added,
I dont think so. We would have heard something from Bush if we were going to do something. Though if war is to come it will happen soon enough. Come summer the desert heat reaches 120 d.

No, I think they'll wait a little longer. I think the Whitehouse is hoping that Iraq will premeditative attack us. Giving us the justification needed to attack. They knocked down a drone, no harm no foul. But have they been actually flying in the no fly zone before? That seems kind of a contradiction. They'll start sending manned Jets in and once Iraq tries to engage one of them then that opens up another can of worms.

Mindmesh, those "drones" are a few million each ...
BTW, UN inspectors report due to the UN on Jan 27. And many people have talked about we should share our intelligence with them - well, I hear we are starting to.
I don't look for any "activity" until Feb.

I know that the drones Cost a lot but there was no loss of life. We won't get the sympathy we need without an attack on a person or manned aircraft. I think if Iraq is getting the nerve to start flying in the No Fly Zone they will eventually engage one of our jets.
Right now I think we're trying to drum up support with our allies and even our own country.

I agree that we will probably wait until we're ready, and I also think that we will probably want the thing done by summer. I know how hot it is over there. Back in 1988, I spent some time at in Oman, in a place called Masira, loading aircraft and helicopters. They would only allow us to work outside for 30 minutes, before we had to take a 15 minute water/shade break. It was the hottest place I've ever been. So I can sympathyze.
