Current configuration:
Purchased domain name at "buydomain.com.
Installed w2k server and created domain using domain name.
Enabled active directory and dns.
Installed Exchange 2k.
Created user and mailbox.
Opened ports 25,110,and 143 on Linksys cable router

Positives:
On the lan I can type into browser http:// (E2k server
name)/exchange/(username) and bring up the users OWA internally.
I can also send and recieve mail for the user inside and outside the lan no
problem.

Problem:
From another computer off the lan I type into the browser http:// (E2k
server name).(domain name.com)/exchange/(username) and I get errors saying
cannot find dns server or unknown host.

Question:
Buydomain.com has something called mx forwarding and I entered the wan ip
address of my linksys router.
Do I need to add another address there or do I need to add a mx record of
some sort to my dns server.

PS- I have been using Sybex for my Exchange studies. Maybe I missed
something on this type of configuration in the book.

From external WAN to internal LAN you need to connect using the router IP
address. You need to set up a static NAT route on the router, from the
router to the exchange server and send all port 80 incoming traffic to the
exchange server. Also if you have a firewall function on the router, you
must allow 'external port 80 connections allowed from anywhere' type of
option.

When you have done that type in '123.123.123.123/exchange' , where
123.123.123.123 is the external interface of your router, and you should
connect and be presented with an authentication box.

MX forwarding tells DNS / IP where to send SMTP packets. Correctly you have
sent them to your external port of the router. Now you need to add a static
route to send the packets from the router to the Exchange server.

When you have done that type in '123.123.123.123/exchange' and you should
connect and be presented with an authentication box.

Your suggestion worked perfect using the IP address.
Why was the path Sybex recommended wrong? Dns resolution using the domain
name doesn't work. Is this misinformation from Sybex?
