You have only listed a set of symptoms. You left out:
1. Your distribution.
2. Details of your system.
3. The source of the program.
4. Whether you compiled it, installed it from RPMs or another package
format.
5. How you connect the the Internet.
6. Whether you were comnnected to the Internet at the time of the test.
7. Whether you could ping the desired target site before trying Gnutella.

Try gnut :-)
Althought this is not a solution I found that when I started using
gnutella gnut was more stable better with connections and better at
finding download stuff that gtk-gnutella at the time.
But I am aware that gtk-gnutella has greatly improved!!!
It seems like there is a problem accessing some files on your local disk.
First off all: Why are you running as root?
Make sure you have free space on your disk.
Then maybe try to upgrade gtk-gnutella?
