Implementing Raid

Hi to all.

I think its basicly not a sql question.
but i take the my chances to ask this.

I dont understand what is know by
implementing raid by software.
implementing raid by hardware.

disk duplexing and disk mirroring are
the software raid or hardware raid
implenentations

what is the difference in both of them.

thank's
Naresh

Take a look here:
http://www.adaptec.com/pdfs/raid_soft_v_hard.pdf

Need Adobe Acrobat to view.

or here:
http://www.adaptec.com/worldwide/pr...aid_soft_v_hard

Both great Articles that explain Software raid vs Hardware raid.

Is simple.

Disk mirroring mean Raid 1. One hard disk copy it data to another harddisk. In order to run Raid 1, you need to have 2 disks. If 1 disk one fail, the second hard disk will still operate.

What's the difference betweend software raid and hardware raid?

Hardware raid is much more faster compare to software raid.

Coz, hardware raid operate by itself. Unlike software raid. If you configure it on the server. It actually will consume the server resources. I mean the memory, processor speed and others. causing your serve to slow down.

Most of the real world set will go for hardware raid. But the only cons is hardware raid is more expensive.

Hopefully, it's help you. Cheers!!!
