What would you guys/girls do?
I've been with a company for about 3years now but have been in the IT field for a little over 6yrs. My education is minimal but is as follows:
AA CIS
A+ Cert
MCP 2000 Server
I'm currently in a postion to take all the tests for MCSE (may need to fresh up before I take a few of them ) and will be doing so all in the next couple of months. I'm the IT LAN Admin at my place of employment. During my brief tenure I've handled the Data Comm aspects of the job dabbling in wiring our 2nd building both tel co and data aspects. Being the only IT pro their for the past 2 years allowed me to get experience in a lot of areas. After avoiding all the initial layoffs, my time has come. I am being laid off on the 31st of Dec.
On the bright side. Because of the great cleanup I've done their they want me around...temporary of course. I've started the process of getting a business license and will have 2 accounts right off the bat...(my current company and our sister company). Corporate is in the middle of an upgrade and a lot of work will need to be done over the next couple months and they want me to do it on an hourly contractor basis. Rate is not an issue "cha CHING"
Predicament:
1. That would only be two accounts. I can count on equal or more monthly income hourly doing the amount of work I'll be doing but after mid Feb or so, when the work is complete, I may be a little slow. Plus I just closed on a house...ARGH!!!!.
But I have great Marketing Skills hence the already acquired accounts. I know I could increase my customer base over the two months and hopefully pick up a few more accounts being that a lot of companies are dropping IT and outsourching.
2. I'm about to recieve another offer from a company I've been talking/interviewing with. Pay will be almost as much as I'm making now...steady "secure" work.
What Would You Do?
PS- I've always wanted to run my own IT Business.
Look forward to your participation.
D

I think that you already answered your own question when you say that you always wanted to have your own business.
Keep in mind that you will be responsible for all the work from clerical to IT. Get yourself a good business lawyer is the best thing I can advise you to do. I did, and it saved me more hassles and worries than I can shake a stick at.
And also think about the health care coverage issue. It's not all about the salary.

Freak,
My health coverage is now covered by my wife. She works for a local HMO and families are covered for free.
So I take it you have your own business? Do you find more and more companies are looking to outsource due to overhead cuts?
I never hoped this would happen but now that I'm going to start it up, I'm kind of hoping that corporations are going this route.

I am very selective with the contracts I accept, in part thanks to a fee schedule that is kind of on the high side
I am not in touch with the market very well because of that.
Health coverage and taxes are the two reasons why most people do not take that step towards being self employed. You can also take that other gig you mentioned -- ie go for the security -- and work nights and week ends with your other clients. I did that for years.

Good ideas freak.
Question for you.
Now try to give me an unbiased opinion. The study guides you have linked in your sig are they good....be real with me. I'm a skeptic when it comes to that stuff.
I may be interested in ordering from it though.
Be real.

Be real? I wrote them, buddy, so yeah I think that they are pretty damn good
Let me put it this way. I have never had to refund anyone. Ever. As a matter of fact, this is what I received in an email today:
"I want to let you know that these are by far the best study guides I've used to prepare for the test. They are in laymen terms and very easy to follow, unlike others that I've tried.
I even feel more confident about taking the 70-210 test because of the study guide. Thanks so much for a great study guide."
Needless to say, that made my day

They are downloadable as soon as payment is processed. It's easier for all parties like that

I got laid off on Sept. 02 2002.
I knew, it would go this way,so i prepared well, started in May 2002 to get my Business license, Bank accounts, and print Business Cards, Flyers, etc, looking for Customers.
I thought, i would be slow for the first few month, no way...Boy, did it take off!
Now i am working 12-14 hours a Day, soon i will have to hire help.( and i am not even US-citizen)
It is all about attitude.
How bad do you want to be your own boss?
It can be done.
If i am not busy..(hasn't happen yet), i update Websites for local Car-Dealers, this alone keeps me busy 2 Days a Week for $25 an Hour. ( 10 hour days)
Think about it:
If you can sell 10 hours of your Time per Week for $85 an Hour, things look different already.(20 hours would be really cool)
I just closed up on servicing Networks and Computers for 400 Car-dealers in the Area and i am scared!
There is a lot of work out there, you just need to find it!
go for it,you will not regret it
If you need more Tips and Tricks, e-mail me.
I will be happy to assist you on your new adventure.
