Should Microsoft Offer Free Exam ?
Although I pursue MCSD.Net, I did not believe any Microsoft certification
improve my chance to get a raise or a new job. All my employer just based on
my ability to do the job, my experience (15 years) and my formal education
(BS).
Thus, I thought Microsoft should offer at least one free exam for each test
to promote their technology.
Any one got an entry level job by MCP ? Just curious.

Makes sense, but I doubt if you covered any microsoft technologies
that are relevant now 15 (or more) years ago.

Microsoft like any other company exist to make money. Given the number
of people who take ms certification (and the numbers are increasing),
there is no need for them to consider such a policy.
They do offer beta exams for free, though.

Re: Should Microsoft Offer Free Exam ?
I've been working for a small company several years ago for $40K. I was
looking for a new job. I used to get offers around $45-$50K. I decided to
get MCSD status. I passed all exams within a couple of months and my life
was changed - offers I started to get were around $70-$75K. Finally I got a
job in a very big financial company with $86K. After 9/11 tragedy I was laid
off due to reduction in force and came back to my previous company as a
consultant with $60 an hour. I don't think that I could make this money
without certification.

If you don't have a reason to get the cert, don't do it. If you're pursuing
it, you must have reasons, even if those are not directly related to a raise
or new job.
> Any one got an entry level job by MCP ? Just curious.
No, I started before there were certifications and got my current job before
taking my first certification exam. However, they did give me a basic
competency test in one interview. It turned out it was a practice exam for
the first MS certification exam I wound up taking.

Re: Should Microsoft Offer Free Exam ?
Thanks for sharing. In my case, it a little bit difference. If you already
on the top, with or without Microsoft certification, it make no difference.
With the current economic, I pursue the certification just as a backup or
insurance for my career in case of reduction in force.

Re: Should Microsoft Offer Free Exam ?
It look like most of MCP/MCSE/MCSD/MCDBA have hand-on experience before they
get the certification.
These people enhance the value of certification not certification enhance
their value. Thus, Microsoft or whoever vendor should pay for the exam.

Re: Should Microsoft Offer Free Exam ?
It's quite simple. I you want to achieve certification, you pay for your
exam like the rest of us have. If you don't desire certification, don't
take the exam. You state that you are already on top and that the
certification is of no value to you. If this is the case, why is it that
important to you? Industry certifications have been extremely value to me.
As somebody entering the industry just as it was beginning to decline, I
have managed to make substantial gains in my economic status largely due to
my certification status giving me a "foot in the door" to encourage
prospective employers to give me the opportunity to prove myself. I'd be
lying if I were to say that I would prefer to not have to spend $125 (used
to be $100) a few times a year to maintain current certifications, but the
return on the investment justifies it in my case.

Re: Should Microsoft Offer Free Exam ?
Microsoft promote their technology in all sorts of ways already but the idea of giving out free tests is one that probably has never or will ever reach the boardroom. So this is a dead issue I think. You do not *get an entry level job by MCP* and you don't get one with an MCSD either. There are other factors that will determine whether you get a job. This is not to say that certifications are of no use, simply that they should be put in a proper context. I note that there are people who have concluded that their certifications are of great value. That's fine: if people want to believe that then I'm not stopping them. My opinion however is that the MCSD VS 6.0 is almost without value principally because the answers to the questions have been made illegally available on the net. This was never stamped down on properly.
Entry level jobs are difficult to come by these days, I wish anyone in that position good luck.

Re: Should Microsoft Offer Free Exam ?
As a matter of fact, I'm a MCDBA and on the way to get MCAD and MCSD. After
spent thousand dollars for certification (study by myself while working
full-time for a dot-com company), I doubt the certification can get me a
better job. It's similar when I joined with my-coworker in a lottery pool.
It just for fun and I don't believe we win lottery. When I joined the
certification game, I found I can make my 12 years old daughter become MCP.
Just cramp it. While a lot of people spent more than 4 years in college to
get the job with title engineer, few people just spent couple month to crap
the exam to become the "certified engineer". There are more than 2 million
VB programmers (Visual FoxPro, C++, ASP not included) but just less than 2%
have MCSD. Why is that ?
