Primary Filegroup is Full

Hi,

All records for our client will go through AQUA software
for QC Checks. Thereafter, the data will be stored in our
SQL Server 2000 under AQUA Database.

Apparently, while running QC Checks for our data, we are
getting error message such as - " Could not allocate space
for object 'TAX' in Database AQUA, 'cos the 'Primary'
filegroup is full. This results in my data not able to
capture in the SQL Server.

Can someone please advice me and also how to locate the
Primary Filegroup in the SQL Server. Your prompt reply
will be appreciated.

Many Thanks

Re: Primary Filegroup is Full

Expand the size of your AQUA database file(s). IF you only have one database file and one log
file, then you should expand the size for the .mdf file.

Re: Primary Filegroup is Full

The problem lies here. I have more than 500 database files
and log files.

How do I resolve this problem ??

Re: Primary Filegroup is Full

Why on earth would you have that amount of database files? How many databases?
I would have a serious discussion with the person who setup the system and sort out this mess...

Re: Primary Filegroup is Full

Kezia,

Tibor is definitely right that this is a mess -- an unusual mess. I would
not create myself such a headache by going into the trouble of creating
these many database files. Maybe you can look again to see whether you
actually do not have so many files?

To find what the database files for the database are, go to EM and right
click the database. Select Properties and check on the second tab from
left, Data files. You will see all your datafiles, file groups, size info
for the database. I expect that you do not find 500 datafile entries there.
The third tab provides info about log files. From there on you know where
to look for expanding the space.

Quentin

Re: Primary Filegroup is Full

1. create a new filegroup with a couple large files on another drive.
2. Move "TAX" and other large tables to the new filegroup. This will allow
"TAX" to auto-expand again.
3. DBCC Shrinkfile (with emptyfile option) the old files in Primary group,
one at a time. This will move the data to other files in the group.
4. Drop the files.
Be warned that this may take a long time.
