Hi Chris,

I can't say how anyone else got started, but I started reading newsgroups to
learn more about my area of specialization, Visual FoxPro. I had changed
jobs from a large shop with an older version of FoxPro to a new job where I
am a "lone wolf" and I needed to learn the new version - then VFP6.

When I went to Visual FoxPro training the instructor showed us how to read
newsgroups and I started reading every post in every Fox group. Eventually I
knew the answers to some of the easiest questions so I started posting
answere whenever I could. I found that I was good at looking stuff up and
testing stuff, so where a lot of people just ask someone else for answers, I
could look them up or work them out and post back to the newsgroup.

Now I'm hooked! I find answering newsgroup questions to be an interesting
and relaxing "hobby."

MVPs are nominated by other MVPs, by Microsoft employees, and by other ways.
During my training the instructor mentioned MVPs so I knew what an MVP was.
I've had contact with some MVPs who knew nothing about the program until
they recieved their award invitation. The awards are made yearly based on
activty during the year before and renewal must be earned each year.

I see that you're reading the newsgroups through the CDO web interface.
You'll find reading much easier if you fire up Outlook Express, then Tools |
Accounts | News - enter your name and email, Microsoft's (free) news server
is msnews.microsoft.com. A list of groups will pop up and you can use the
filter to find groups you are interested in.

In OE you can also create a message footer which will automatically be added
to each post. There are OE-specific newsgroups if you need more help, or you
can access http://insideoe.tomsterdam.com/ for some useful information.
