Help
I just blew out my Dell Optiplex and installed Red Hat 8.0, I am trying to install my earthlink ISP software but all I get is a window with all the files that are on the CD. When I click on setup I get a window that says "Nautilus has no installed viewer capable of displaying /mnt/cdrom/windows/access/_setup.exe". I understand the Windows part. So I understand why it won't install, but I spoke with tech support and they told me that I would not have any problems installing the software on a Linux partition. What file do I need to click on. I also have no audio from my sounblaster card. I want to learn this OS but I am getting very frustrated. Any help would be most appreciated.

iggy - if you understand the windows part, why are you trying to install windows software on a Linux instalation. It's incompatable & will not work, let alone load. I could very easily be wrong, but I have yet to see ANY Linux software with a setup.exe file.
My advice would be to get your acount info from earthlink & set it up manually. It will pretty much walk you through it.
dial up #'s / DNS servers - names & addresses / your log on ID & password / e-mail servers.
The RedHat getting started guide or the Sys Admin Guide are both good places to start reading. They are free downloads from RedHat

Unfortunately I was led astray by some dweeb at earthlink tech support who basically told me the install files where on my disk. I recontacted them this morning and thanked them for the confusion Anyway I appreciate your input and after speaking with a freind who also sent me some great link I am on the right track. Didn't mean to post such a stupid question.

Cool - glad to hear you're on the right track. I can't beleive earthlink.
I've had a couple of incidents where someone actually got the files to launch & made a hosed mess out of the instalation.
Sorry to say, but because of this economy I'm doing tech support. I can't beleive my ears sometimes when we have to conference in the tech. dept from some of the major vendors because of a liability issue if we procede without them & what comes out of their mouths.

I was totally surprised last night. I was checking my email and someone from earthlink tech support actually typed out step by step instructions for me. He even included the I.P. numbers that I needed.
So hopefully I can sit down and play with it this afternoon.

Cool
It isn't that hard to do at all. Just knowing where to enter the info & have the info in the first place is 80% of the entire operation.
Good luck - Have fun

Ya I did a whereis for the pppd and chat file to make sure I had them. So I have to just create the files and see what happens. I'm a little rusty with vi so I'll have to open my unix book reread the chapter. But I am determined to learn this. I just have to get out of the MicroSoft mindframe

Heh, heh, vi rules! Actually, I found that Earthlink was pretty good at giving me dialup instructions for my Linux box way back when I tried it. Let us know if you have probs.

That is what I'm doing also.
MCSE's are a dime a dozen now days, so I won't be going there. RHCE's are in demand in this area. After M$ shot itself in the foot with Licensing v6, Linux is gaining much momentum around here. After getting into it for a short time and the recent headway it has made in it's capabilities, I see a definate need to be proficient on it. IBM has a free downloadable LPI course, and quite a few other good support docs. It is good for a starting place. My only main complaint about Linux is how the documentation is strung out & finding the most current docs takes some time to find.
What I like best about it is how flexable it is & how everything you need is already there. Whese as in M$, you have to go find some third party piece of software.

I have decided to focus on Cisco certs after my N+, and after reading this article in network mag. I have also decided to break away from M$ and concentrate more on unix/linux. I can't believe I took a solaris class about 8 months ago and because of my exposure to M$ i can't even remember how to create a file. So now I am waiting for my copy of learning vi to arrive and in the meantime I'm hitting my Solaris book and the Linux sites. Thanks for the input guys and I'm sure I will be asking for some help when I get the time to set up that modem program.
