setting gtk2 themes without gnome-settings-daemon?

Is there a way to make gtk2 apps use my desired theme without running
gnome-settings-daemon beforehand? gsd changes my background and starts
xscreensaver when i'm running fluxbox.

Well you could either
A) Setup GSD too display the background you want and not load xscreensave
[OR]
B) Configure each app to use the apropriate theme individually.

(A) is probably easier.
