NM-1V + VIC-2FXS useful?

Gurus,

I've just picked up a second hand Cisco 2610 that's come loaded with a
WIC-1T, NM-1V & VIC-2FXS. I have to work out which bits of this I'm
going to keep, and which I want to sell to pay for other bits.

Current goal is CCNP. Still undecided if I want to head onto CCIE.
(Yes, I want one.. but it seems like a lot of wasted drinking time).
My plan for this router was to drop in a WIC-2T and maybe a NM-1E-2W
and use it as the central router/frame relay switch in my setup (1601
+ WIC-1T, 1601-R + WIC-1T, y 2511).

So.. complete Voice newbie question. What does this VIC-2FXS thing
actually do? The doco says it emulates a telephone line. Does that
mean I can plug a modem into each side and emulate dial-on-demand
(between the 2511 Aux and one of the serials on the 1601-R configured
for async)... or is this using a chainsaw to prune the roses?

How can I test that all is working ok?

Should I hang on to this thing, or is it worth flogging to pay for
some of the other stuff?

What other equipment would I need to add to this to make something
useful for a CCIE lab?

Thanks for any ideas

Matt

The NM-1V (and NM-2V) are essentially VIC holders with DSPs. The FXS
ports provide dial tone. You can plug a single line phone into each
port. You can route VoIP calls between the ports, or to other routers
that also have voice ports.

They would be nice to keep if you plan on playing with VoIP at all.

Thanks Dave,

Is routing VoIP between the two interfaces on the same VIC
signifcantly different from routing VoIP between two VICs on separate
routers... or is it essentially an encapsulation issue with the
intermediate routers setup as for any other IP service? Are we talking
QoS here? Am I able I do something stupid like route one VIC out e0/0
on the 2610, send it through my 1601 from e0 to s1, back into the 2610
through s0/0 and out the other side of the 2FXS?

How about setting up a PC with a sound card and a VoIP client (or
maybe the unused D-Link phone card thats sitting in the server room at
work) and routing between the two.. or with this setup will I be
missing something fundamental?

Getting hold of this (especially for the price) was a bit of luck.. so
I may as well capitalise on it! I guess the core question is do I need
another router with a similar VIC to take advantage of this?

I do have a habit of talking to myself.. especially when in study
mode.. but this is the first time I've considered doing it through a
grands worth of router

Thanks

Matt

With creative destination patterns and another router with a VoIP
feature set, you can send a call thru your network and them back to the
same router. I've done it for testing. For example, on one router
(router1) I would add something like

dial-peer voice 2399 pots
destination-pattern 2399
port 1/0/0
prefix ,2266
!
dial-peer voice 2300 voip
destination-pattern 23..
req-qos controlled-load
ip precedence 5
no vad
session target ipv4:191.0.1.100

and on the remote router (router2) I added

dial-peer voice 2399 voip
destination-pattern 2399
req-qos controlled-load
ip precedence 7
no vad
session target ipv4:192.0.0.100

What happens is I originate a call on router1, dialing 2399. Router1
sends the call to router2, which matches the voip dial-peer back to
router1, so it hairpins the call back to router1. Router1 matches the
2399 pots peer, but outpulses DTMF 2266 (for E&M) to ring the extension
next to me.

I don't know about a VoIP client. Sounds like a good experiment though.

No, but it helps. You will need another router with voice support though
so you can at least add dial-peer statements.
