I used the Linux+ Bible and thought it was pretty good. I've heard that that most of the "Bible" books are worth the money.
Before you buy you might want to check the price here first

I have looked through thos Red Hat bibles book and it didn't seem like the greatest book for the newbie. It goes into configuring FTP, Apache, etc - which is great for the intermediate, but the complete newb....maybe not. Plus it's a really big book, which could be intimidating.

The book I am using as one of the many resources for myself is this:

Buy.com is selling it for $13; can't beat that. It goes for $20 at the store. Don't buy the bible book because it has the RH 8.0 CDs - you can easily download those for free.

Let me also add....Don't go to bookpool.com without first checking out the lowest price at a place like http://www.bestwebbuys.com/books/ Why pay more than you have to.

And if you don't want to spend any money, there are TONS of Linux sites we can overwhelm you with that teach you the basics.

I found the Bible books to be pretty good, and pretty complete. A bit detailed for the absolute newbie, but a good value for the money and should have everything that you need to get up to speed on Linux.

I found the linux+ Bible very imcomplete. For a newbe, It takes for granted that you know the commands. The labs are poor.Just was not what I expected for a book writen for a newbe...Looking for a book with step by step labs that are geared to a very newbe to command line enviroment.

You can probably find some better information on the web for the complete newbie than you can in a Linux+ book...

http://www.linuxnewbieguide.com/ is one of the better for the total newbie.
