Quoting "kphua">>-------------------
JRE stands for Java Runtime Environment, which includes the Java Virtual Machine that runs the bytecode compiled from your Java source code.
---------------------------------
Well there you have it.
JRE = Java RunTime Env,
JDK = Java Development Kit.

You need JDK if you wanna compile your classes etc (development). I think JRE comes with JDK.
Well, I downloaded the JDK 1.4 and JRE got installed automatically. YOu need JRE aswell, Thats what Java uses to run.

Hope this helps.

Cool IDE

Sup,
I think FORTE is written in Java. So its pretty heavy on memory. But it is a very good IDE. I personally use JPadPro or JBuilder.
JCreatorPro is another goodie.

* If you wanna use JBuilder then make sure you have pretty good processor and lots of memory, I usually to larger projects with it. And it eats up RAM man

Sup,
Tell ya what.. just download JDK latest version from Sun.
Here check this out.. This will answer your question.
BTW.. JDK 1.4.1 is now out.

You can get it from this link.

JDK1.4.1 and info on JRE/JDK -- check it

Hope this clears things up a little.

You defnitely need the JDK. I think SDK is just an older name for JDK or vice versa. It's the same thing; they just changed what they call it.

They just invented a new set of naming for Java 2 to confuse everyone, as Tree mentioned, it is more or less the same stuff: http://java.sun.com/products/jdk/1.2/java2.html

I hate FORTE, it takes up too much memory. I still do most of my programming in vi.
