length of study time for CCNA

I have been studying at home since August (15-20 hrs/week) for the CCNA.
With Todd Lammle's book I find myself needing to re-read sections to 'burn
it in', so I don't expect to be ready for the exam until February or March.

How have you been averaging as far as CCNA/Cisco prep time? Is there
another resource (apart from the Sybex tests/flash cards) that would help
me?

Thanks
-Brian

There's nothing like a real router to work on. I am reasonably
intelligent and do well with remembering what I read, but the hands on
of programming a router really brings it home. Routersim is the best
simulator I have used so far, but there are still a few things that
don't work properly, such as they way they handle Vlans. It accepts
most of the common commands, but doesn't simulate the blocking of
ports not included in the vlan.

Cisco offers a 4 port ethernet router with a single uplink. I think
the retail cost is around C$500 but they sport the same software as
the Wan routers and support most of the commands. This would make a
cheaper alternative for CCNA labs and can double as a dsl router for
your home network internet connection.

The only caveat, if you are connecting 2 of these routers together you
have to notice which ports you are connecting them through. If you
connect uplink on A to uplink on B, you need a crossover cable. Same
thing for connecting any of the 4 downlink ports. If you connect
uplink on A to downlink port on B you need a normal Lan Cable.

Re: length of study time for CCNA

I took about 4 months to study for the CCNA, I used SmartCertify software
which has some light sims in it, which only allow you to set up the same
examples every time, but it did the job decently in giving me a feel for
configs. I also used a few brain dump webs but I'd really recommend the
Cisco Press 640-607 CCNA Certification Guide. The exam on the CD is just
like the real thing and it comes with sims made in Flash just like the real
thing. I probably won't use anything else besides Cisco Press for any
further Cisco certs...
