monitor problem
The monitor on the pc comes on for the post and gets to the first windows screen, then it goes off. The light on the monitor is green, which from what I am reading in my books that is just an adjustment with the contrast buttons, so far that does not work. The harddrive loads up, just we have no picture, so that makes me think that it is not a hardware issue. Tried another monitor and it does the same thing. You can boot up in safe mode, which I check for the power save mode it is on "always on" mode. Now I am sitting here wondering what to do next...any ideas? What the heck am I missing here, I am sure it is something simple that I am over looking.

would the monitor quit working like that just out of the blue, it was working fine, no software changes or hardware changes were made, the monitor just started acting up. I will try the video drivers and let you know.
Thanks

Re: monitor problem
you can make an easy troubleshoot.
boot on safe mode. if you are able to enter on the windows interface and windows load completely, definetely you have a driver problem or missconfiguration settings for your monitor.
high resolution or high refresh rate don`t supported by your monitor is the cause.
change the driver of the video card to standard vga and boot your windows and update your drivers later.
remember to use 640x480 and low refresh rate like 60 to boot up windows normally. later you can add updated drivers.
what kind of monitor and video card you have?

i recently had a monitor problem; my monitor was getting dark/hard to see. (opened it up and twisted some knobs and it worked temporarily, but then went dark again.) so i stressed and tried hooking-up different monitors, all to no avail. theN i discovered that it was the poweRsupply! i got a new psu and that seemed to save the day. don't know if that helps//

The clue which Enforcer picked up on is that everything is fine, even the cloud screen is seen, all the way up until Windows loads. Then it goes blank. This is obviously a software issue and has nothing to do with hardware, either with monitor adjustements or a faulty screen.
I agree with Alex and Enforcer that drivers could be the issue, and also check what refresh you are set to. Sometimes optimal isn't always the right one to use (in rare occasions). At one of our branch offices there is a PC running 98 that has a screen that shakes on the edges, I changed the refresh from optimal to 60 Hz and it stabilized. You never know.

agree.
refresh rate is a very important thing to check. old monitors and old VGA monitors are very limited on this feature.

Monitor Problem
As long as you see the computer going through post. You can eliminate the hardware issue. Reboot your computer and press the f8 key to enter into safe mode. From there I would right click on desktop, go to properties, and change screen resolution to 640x480. If the resolution doesn't change and you only have the option to select that one and only setting, then you know you have a driver issue. From Safe Mode go to the control panel, double click systems icon, if you are running windows 95-Me click on device manager, then click the plus sign next to display, YOu will see the display driver. You will need to highlight it and rt. click and do an uninstall. Reboot your computer and let the system rerecognize the display and load its drivers. If it doesn't find the drivers you will need to insert the installation disks or the cds that came with the machine and locate your drivers.
If you have Xp and above when you double click systems icon in control panel, you will then click on the hardware tab, then device manager and follow the steps above to delete and reinstall.
Post back to see if this helps.
