Kernel panic installing RedHat with non-IDE Mitsumi CD-ROM

I tried to install RH 7.3 on an old Gateway P-133 with 32 meg ram, ATI
Mach 64, 2 Gig Drive with 256Meg reserved for WfW 3.11, and an old
Mitsumi FX001D CD-ROM with standalone controller. All all supposed to be
compatible.

I discovered that 7.3 no longer supports this drive on install.
The "oldcdrom.img" diskette only holds parallel port drivers. So, I made
a diskette from 7.1 that does contain the mcd and mcdx drivers. This
didn't seem to work with the 7.3 install diskette, so I burned a 7.1
install diskette. The result, after loading the driver with "linux dd"
and selecting parameters 0x300,10 is a kernel panic with an "interrupt
not synced" message.

I have tried both drivers with the same result. I tried 0x340,11 as
parameters (from the HCL) with the result "CD-ROM not found". This is
not surprising since the manual shows 0x300, IRQ 10 as defaults, I read
the same from the dip switches, and the drive works fine under DOS/WfW
with no override parameters on the driver.

I had previously installed RH 5.2 on a 486 Micron with this same CD-ROM
drive. I probably could install 5.2, but desire a more modern kernel.

The computer will only be used for web surfing and letter writing. The
printer is a Canon Bj-200e which is why I am retaining the windows
partition. I may have to copy files to the windows partition and reboot
to print.

Any guru out there with an idea as how to get Red Hat 7.X on this computer?
