chkmail under Debian
Hello All,
So my problem is that users are no longer greeted with how many,
if any, new emails or the total amount of mail in their box at login.
The server runs Debian, is the email, web server, and developmental
platform for the students. The distrobution was originally Debian
potato, but now has been "apt-get"ed to now being essentially Debian
woody.
This happened because one of my assts. got happy with apt-get,
apparently, during an IMAP upgrade, it got rid of the program that
does the new mail function. He put chkmail back in the /usr/bin/,
but it segfaults when runs as a normal user. Can anyone help a
student SysAdmin? Thanks in advance.

What do you mean by "he put it back"? Did he reinstall the package that
contains it? Install a binary he found on the Web somewhere? What?
BTW you probably should do an 'apt-get dist-upgrade' on that system.

I would thouraghly recommend running : apt-get dist-upgrade
Because woody is fine now (just make sure you have the following sources)
# This is the sources file for woody
deb ftp://ftp.au.debian.org/pub/debian woody main contrib non-free
deb http://non-us.debian.org/debian-non-US woody/non-US main contrib
non-free
deb http://security.debian.org/ stable/updates main
Note the "woody" not stable context.
Now for chkmail to work you need to make sure that you have the following
packages installed. (Do not just copy old apps, use apt-get install)
usr/bin/chkmail mail/uw-imapd,mail/uw-imapd-ssl
usr/lib/spamfilter/bin/chkmail mail/spamfilter
usr/share/man/man1/chkmail.1.gz mail/uw-imapd,mail/uw-imapd-ssl
In otherwords
apt-get install --reinstall uw-imapd uw-imapd-ssl spamfilter
That should fix you up.
