How many people feel like they ave been lied to by IT Training centers

I am wanting to know how many folks are in the same situation I am in and
feel they were taken advantage of by training centers saleing Bootcamps .
Claiming outrageous salary's when you completed training and of course they
would help you with job placement when you finished . Only to be stuck with
a student loan and no real hopes for a job ?? And to answer the question yes
I have some experience about 7 years . Anyone who feels in the same boat
email me at tonyrdavis@hotmail.com . Dont know what will come of this am
actually considering finding a law firm to file a class action suit .

Thanks for your time,
Tony

Re: How many people feel like they ave been lied to by IT Training centers

In the present economy there is only one key to a large salary in the IT
field. Experience!!! Without it forget it. In the early 90's I made 50,000 a
year with a large corporation as a desktop technician. These days you would
be hard pressed to make over 20,000 doing that. Hell at my company I don't
even have the systems repaired if it is more than a year old we donate it to
charity and replace it. The key was to get in when the IT field was booming.
For anyone looking for a new career field and wanting to make lots of money,
these days IT is not that field for you. I would not advise anyone to peruse
this field to make lots of money these days. If you want that you better
peruse a profession in medicine, I hear they are starving for people. My mom
has been a nurse for 30+ years and makes a killing now. In the early 90's
she was barley making it, funny how things change.

My $0.02

Re: How many people feel like they ave been lied to by IT Training centers

Times are tough for us these days. I just finished a 6 months contract that
payed 47$/hour. I made my money and only 2 years of experience. I love the
IT business not because it pays well but because I truly enjoy it.
Having no prospects now, I decided to incorporate a company and offer my IT
services to small businesses. The respone is extremely encouraging. I called
100 businesses today and 22 were interested in my services. There is business
out there for everyone who has the guts to go out and get business for
himself.
Also I was interviewed last week by the Nunavuk Regional Government and they
offered 45000/year. This interview took place 75 km south of the arctic.
There is nothing to do out there but admire nature and go hunting and
camping and stuff. They told me that I would be making about 100 000/year in
total because of the extra consulting I could do after work. I am the only
IT guy up there who can fix computers and set up networks.
This is just to say that the IT field is a great business to be in nowadays
and I know it is tough out there but this will change. According to the
master's of networking (the Nortel people) this will start to happen late
september 2003.

Cheers,

Re: How many people feel like they ave been lied to by IT Training centers

Of course the IT Training Centers are going to embelish (lie) how great IT
is and how much money you'll make after you complete their class(es).
That's the way they sell their product, which is training people in whatever
they'll pay to learn, whether that person will actually benefit or not. They
have product to sell, and sales people to sell it. They don't really care
about you, me, or how oversold the IT field is. They only care about
filling seats with paid suckers... errr... students.

"IT Training Firm"
So you have no experience and you've never used a computer before? No
problem. Do you know the average CCNA makes $60k/yr? Take our $6,000 class
and you too can be a CCNA. Will you be paying with cash or credit?

"Person who doesn't know any better"
Great! Where do I sign up? If I max all my credit cards I can pay for this
class and then make $60k/yr. too!!!

The same rule always applys when spending ones hard earned money.... Buyer
Beware...

Re: How many people feel like they ave been lied to by IT Training centers

Times are really hard right now in the IT field. I know guys with lots of
exp. that are having trouble finding jobs. From what I have seen, its takes
about 2 months to find a job here in Atlanta. There are still some hot
area's in the job market though.
These places are going off past data. They know that thier student's aren't
getting these offers any more. If the students did some research, they'd
know the same thing to...

My advice would be to take any job you were offered right now. Then make
friends with people in departments that you think you would like to work
in. That way, if they ever know of any spots coming open, they'll be able
to let you know.

If your a hard worker and catch on to things fast, you'll move up no matter
where you work. People catch on to things like that.

As for joining a union and working your way up.... Screw that. That would
be a big mistake. If you have 10 years exp. and your only making 35k
you either live in a very small town, or you have no idea how to do your
job.

I've got less than 3 years in the IT field and make over 60k.
The money is still out there(just not as much). You just need a liitle exp.
and hard work.
It doesn't hurt to know people either.
I start a new job on Monday with people I used to work for. They're the
only reason I was interviewed.

Oh, they lie alright, but I am not sure it would meet the legal
requirements. Before you spend money on a lawyer you might think back
to what exactly was said to you. If they said that average CCNAs make
xxx, that may not be a lie. If they said, "You will make xxx after
our class," then it is a lie. The former statement is designed to
imply something that is false, but it is up to you to derive that
false meaning from their statement. I don't believe that legal action
would be successful if that is the case.

I am guessing you would have better luck if they had promised to find
you a job and reneged on the deal. As I understand it even verbal
contracts are still contracts and contract law applies to those
situations. Again, it all depends on what exactly was said. If they
said that they provide job placement assistance, then I would guess
that they only need to prove that they tried. If they said they would
find you a job, then they have to deliver exactly that.

These companies are extremely wiley and sleazy, so my guess is that
they don't make promises (such as "we will find you a job") that are
difficult to keep. I am thinking that they didn't make any overt
claims that were false or difficult to follow up on, but that their
misleading claims led you to believe they were promising more than
they really were. Again you have to be the judge. But don't let you
anger over the situation make you go spend even more money on a lawyer
if you don't have much of a case.

you obviously don't live in the UK then ? My girlfriend is a nurse and only
makes $30000 US a year - pathetic after all the hard work and training she
has done.

Re: How many people feel like they ave been lied to by IT Training centers

I remember after getting a CCNA in 1999 Cisco asking me if I'd like to come
to California to work for them !! Completely unsolicited I swear. It was a
tempting prospect sitting in a freezing winter in the UK. I turned them
down. Even though I am now about to take a CCIE lab, I still think an
Englishman in the US with only a CCNP/CCDP would be hard put to find a job
and I am sure I would have been first out the door when the recession hit in
the US industry.

If I get the CCIE, please invite me back over, Mr Cisco - I might take you
up on that offer !

Good luck,
Steve

Considering all the CCIE's that Cisco has laid off, I wouldn't hold my
breath on that invite.
