Transfer - SQLServer
Friends,
I have a machine with some databases SQL7, and i need to transfer to another
new machine, the second machine have to use the same name, i would like to
do
that in commercial time, without need to stop the old machine.
I think about two possibilities :
Option A: Install the SQL and turn off the old machine and change the new
machine
name, but some people said the SQL crash when the name machine is changed.
Is it true ? Does it happen in SQL2K ?
Option B: Make a new installation, with the same name the old machine with
the machine not plugged in the network, and get data with Backup.
Is it possible ? Would i get to install in a StandAlone machine and after
set this machine into a DOMAIN ?
If there are another possibilities, please suggest them.

Re: Transfer - SQLServer
Hi Leandro,
As a networking rule, no two machines can have the same name on the same
network. You'll have to
- Transfer the backup copy to the new machine;
- Shutdown/pause the production machine;
- Rename the new machine to the same name and join in the domain;
- Restore the backups on the new machine.
- Also bring along all user logins.
