A+ Cert Help
Hello,
I am an MCSE and a CNA, with several years of experience in the field. I
live in the Orlando area. I have been out of the industry for a couple of
years due to illness and I am trying to get back into the job market. The
MCSE is for NT4 and I have never touched a Windows 2000 Server. I have a
lot of experience with PC's, having built them from scratch and tearing them
down and putting them back together. I find with the time off I have had, I
need a good refresher.
I see a lot of job listings for A+ certs, and I figured this would be a good
way to come back in. I obtained my MCSE entirely through self study, as
well as some other certs (CNA and Firewall-1).
I see that the Micheal Meyers books are highly recommended. On Amazon there
are two books, once called "A+ Certification All-in-One Exam Guide, 4th
Edition" and another called "Mike Meyers' A+ Certification Passport". What
is the difference between the two books? Which would be better for me?
Any help is appreciated!
Sam

The passport book is, I think, for those who have significant
background in the field, while the other book is for those who are
starting with less experience. You haven't indicated how much actual
PC experience you have, although you may in fact have it. A+ is best
explained here...

I have experience with PC's dating back to the TRS-80 (not called PC's then,
of course). My industry experience amounts to over ten years. I'm a former
IT Manager currently finishing my MIS degree. After a car wreck from two
years ago, I've been out of work. The Orlando market is bad, but with the
A+ I can at least get back in the workforce as a PC Technician. Every
little bit helps...
I just bought the passport book, and I understand it pretty well.
Hopefully, it will work for me. Thanks for your reply.

The Orlando market is very bad. In fact, the market's bad all the way
over to Tampa. Everyone I know who's gotten an IT job around here
recently has gotten promoted/transferred to the IT department from
within their company without having to have certifications of any type.
*Those* people talk endlessly about how open the market is. I wish it
were that easy for everyone.
Get the A+ and get other certtifications and training if at all
possible. It'll help you out greatly in this area, IMHO. Good luck.

I've bought the book, and I am on my way. I never thought I'd see the day
when an A+ was more valuable than an MCSE, but in Orlando, that is exactly
what has happened.
Thanks!

Re: A+ Cert Help
Slammin' Sammy.... the A+ passport book is just a revised version of the
origional book by Mike Meyers. Im currently going for my A+ certification
and I have been told if you go back for your MCSE you will also get your A+
and Network + cert. Both books are good, but the passport book is just
"straight to the point" and the other book is MORE in depth... the passport
has been and i will recommend it to anyone

Re: A+ Cert Help
Sammy, get the "All in one". If you've been out of the industry that
long, you may want to revisit the basic concepts of all aspects of the
A-Plus including historical concepts.
After all, it really is true the if you don't use it, you lose it -
with the exception of riding a bike. And even then some people "lose
it"
