Windows 2000 Pro - Password Protected

Time to pick your brains again chaps. Just bought a second hand laptop at an
auction - sold as seen - didn't get a chance to switch it on - dirt cheap
etc. Took it home - it's using Windows 2000 Professional BUT asks for a
username and password at the login screen. Is there anyway to get in via a
backdoor password/ user id so I can reinstall a new OS on it? Maybe you know
where to get a patch that zaps the password/ user id etc. I know that I just
can't insert a bootdisk etc cos it's ntfs and has extra security features.
Am I pissing in the wind here and maybe I need to get a new hard drive or is
there an easy way out.

Also anyone know where to get new or second hand charger without having to
go through IBM ;> ) Nuff said!!!

Thanks in advance.

Just set the BIOS to boot from the floppy drive first. Win2K's security
does not stop you from booting from a floppy, as long as it is set to be
the first boot device. Then just partition/format the HD and install
your new OS.

If you're talking about the Windows 2000 login screen, just do the
install, delete and recreate the partition and then it will reformat the
HD as part of the install.

How do you know it uses Windows 2000 if you're stopped by a password at the
BIOS startup?

Re: Windows 2000 Pro - Password Protected

Not stopped by the BIOS password except when I hit F1 and try and get into
the BIOS - it tells me that there is a supervisor password and I only have
limited BIOS options - none of which are to change the boot sequence.

Did you say it's an IBM? Check their website for at least some models
there is no way to reset the PW.

http://www.pc.ibm.com/qtechinfo/YAST-3JZS7U.html?
lang=en_US& brand=IBM+ThinkPad%7CThinkPad+
560&family=IBM+ThinkPad%
7CThinkPad+560&doctype=&subtype=All&up=unknownuser1004106089
How to Set, Remove or Change a Supervisor Password on your IBM ThinkPad
365X, 380, 385, 560, 600, 750, 755, 760, 765, 770.

Note: Do Not Forget Your Supervisor Password! If you forget your
Supervisor password, there is no way to reset your password to enter the
BIOS configuration. Setting a supervisor password automatically sets the
hard drive password. If you do not remember your supervisor password you
must have the system serviced to have the system board and hard drive
replaced. Proof of purchase is required, and this repair is not covered
under the warranty.

Re: Windows 2000 Pro - Password Protected

You need to clear the password. Normally, with the computer unplugged
(just turned off is NOT enough, unless it has a "real" power switch),
remove the CMOS battery and short a "clear CMOS" jumper set on the
motherboard for a few seconds. Note, this will wipe ALL CMOS settings,
not just the password.

If you can get into the Bios the following link may help to reset the
password!! http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/
I have not tried it myself! but reliable informed it works.
Another option is to remove the HDD & connect it to a desktop pc using
a 2.5" to 3.5" adaptor. you can the just format & then hopefully the
floppy or cd will be the next devises to boot from.
good luck
Andy
