i dont like RedHat, what is next for me? advice please
Well, RedHat 8.0 is out. I don't like it. They have gone way too GUI
for my tastes (if I can't get genuine Mac OS then it's not worth it).
I have felt this way since about 7.2. I was wondering what distro i
should consider next? I have heard good things about Slackware,
Debian and LFS. I would like the Linux community's input on my move
to a new distro.
--macman
p.s. mabey I'm making too big a deal of all this. If you think so,
tell me.

You are making too big a deal of all this. Maybe you ought to buy
a Mac?
Else use SuSE, is my recommendation.

You have answered your own question. Go get a copy of Slackware
8.1.01 and give it a spin. If it is to minimal for you then move on
to Debian. If that one is too much then take the LFS plunge.

I'd suggest gentoo <http://www.gentoo.org/> if you really want full
control of everything. By "full control", I do mean compile everything
for yourself. It's alot more ready-made than lfs, and the dependancy
system is rival to that of debian, but you can pretty much tell it
to only include just those types of packages you want, if at all
possible.
Obviously, if you tell it not to install kde or qt and you try to
install koffice, you'll get kde.. for example.

Perhaps you are. I dunno what you mean by "way too gui". The text
files are still there if you want to fiddle with them, the gui config
tools are just that, config tools, for you to use at your discression.

Big deal, no i dont think so, i feel the same way having used slackware
for just about 10 years. In those 10 years i have seen many distro's
start deveoloping, i have seen some dissapier, i dont want to sound bias
but i have tryed um all, i still use slackware on all my networking
machines and on my personal computer.
Make up your own mind, simply install slackware and choose for yourself.
If i may make a sugestion, Peanut linux as it is called has made a
impression on me, possably because its based on slackware, but it does
give one something new to play with.
On another note, i would be as bold as to say, distro's like Redhat and
Mandrake are in fact very GUI thesedays, thats because the mass of
potential linux users want a massive GUI, they want what win$h!t gives
them, they want something which installes itself, askes no questions
tells no lies and works out of the box. (work that one out yourself).
O yes, dont expect that with slackware or Peanut for that matter, but i
would recommend them.

Well, Redhat is like most linux distros ---> you get the GUI stuff and under
that you get linux.
You may *not* install all of the "eye-candy"; or you may do so. Your choice.
The big deal is that RH (whatever version) is not like Slack --- the init
deal is different.
So, which do **you** like better?
Good luck.

Re: i dont like RedHat, what is next for me? advice please
I think we're seeing that the larger Distros' are looking for a
means to make the the Linux releases easiler to use for novices, and that
means more clickie--are-you-sure--- GUI front ends. You can buy Linux
boxes now in Austin, TX for $300 , and similar Doz boxes are $600. That
$300 goes to MS !
Face it, **new* users buy home computers for Internet Access and local
word processing for letters and such and that is what the distros are
tryings to
make easier to use.
I think most of us now have been Linux/Unix programmers are experienced
enough to be able to figure out all the quirks in the past Linux releases
that still
give us a reason to like it -- But I think in the future will may very well
be a GUI
type -- ie NT clone .... The overhead is very expenseive.

We have some information which might help you in the a.o.l.s FAQ, to be
found at
http://wombat.san-francisco.ca.us/perl/fom
We Slackers think of ourselves as a breed apart. Everyone else is GLAD
we're apart. One of our current jokes is that we are the Klingons of
the Linux world. GUI admin tools have no HONOUR. It is a good day to vi.

I think it's a reasonable question, but your choice of newsgroups might
have skewed the results in a particular direction.

Salvation? You've come to the right place!

The Slackware installation is mainly text-based. I, personally,
prefer text-based, but you might need to try it before you decide if
it's for you or not.

Basically, use whatever you prefer. I like Slackware more than
Debian & LFS, so I use it. If you prefer a different distribution,
then use that.
Asking this sort of question on alt.os.linux.slackware will not get
you an unbiased opinion.

IMHO, Slackware rocks.
It is stable, you can compile things from source, and there are no
dependency headaches.
I tried Debian and didn't care for it. I see where it does have some
advantages (the folks at my local LUG rave about apt-get) but overall I
found it to be slower and harder to use than Slackware.
Slackware lets you have a bit more control over your system than most
distros, IMHO. It does require you have more of an idea of what you're
doing than others, as well. Slackware is often called the most
UNIX-like Linux distro. It also uses a much nicer init scheme. In
general, you have one script per runlevel rather than a billion
symlinks. It does support the more standard SysV init setup, though.
