Best place for that is the manufacture of the CD-Writer for any issues related to XP PRO and possible work around .
This is a scenario where I would remove averything related to the CD-Writer drive (driver and hardware)and start fresh with the install of the drive after checking web for any issues .
Sorry not much help here .

XP isn't compatible with many pre-XP CD-burning software. Usually the barebones basic burning program that comes with XP will work with any burner, but you're very limited as to what you can do.
I installed a dual-boot (98/XP) and I boot in 98 when I want to burn CD's. It's then main reason I didn't go with a clean install of XP.
I'm sure the latest edition of Roxio's or Nero's CD-Writer software would solve your friend's problems. If he's willing to start from scratch and set up a dual boot, that would be more cost effective (since his old burner software would work with 98), assuming he still has his Windows 98 install CD.
Just remember that 98 can't see XP's NTFS partition. The work-around to that is to copythe files you need to burn to your 98 partition while in XP mode, since XP can read FAT32.

If you burn a lot of CD's, that's a great idea. Perfect for letting you know when you reached the limit. Good to keep in mind when you first set up your hard drive. Partition Magic would do the trick as well.

There's really no such thing as a "CD Writer" driver. A CD Writer is just a CD-ROM as far as the OS is concerned, it's the application that takes advantage of the CD writing. You need to be sure that the version of your burning software is compatible with that device. The suggestion to find the latest version of Nero or Easy CD Creator is a good one.

agree with someguy get the latest update for your software.
XP is ok for burning but limited functions.
much the same as scanning ok but limited features in XP.

i haven't got xp so i don't know what it's burning abilities are, but i have burnt one audio cd from windows media player in win98. it sucks. there was pops or bangs or time missing from each song. i stick to nero.
i normally like to burn music cds slowly. i remember burning them at full speed (x4 in my case, LOL) and they did not play at all.
