This is a question that was on one of my "practice" exams for the I-Net+. I am sure in any Certification this is VERY important to know I have a problem with their answer Can anyone help me here?
Question:
Your boss called you because he can send email but cannot receive it. Which protocol is most likely to be the cause of the problem?
POTS
SMTP
SSL
POP3
The answer I gave is POP3. POP3 is used for RECIEVING E-MAIL and SMPT is used to send? It was found Incorrect and said that the correct answer is SMPT.
Am I having a mental blackout from studying too much? Or is my way of thinking correct and the test administrator is having a mental blackout?
HELP! =]

That must have been a misprint -- they are quite common in these certification books that are rushed to print. SMTP is for sending, POP is for downloading. You might want to download Outlook Express and configure it to download and send mail through an account like yahoo! and that will help you to remember which is which because ytou need the different servers to send or download mail.

Thanks Randy! WHEW! and look at the explanation they have to offer...I have to mark it wrong for the right answer...I guess that is one way to learn =]
It has totally been driving me crazy..I thought it was a trick question LOL!
Their Explanation
A protocol is a set of rules that tell computers how to communicate and exchange data.
SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) is used to send email, so it is most likely to be the cause of the problem.
POP3 (Post Office Protocol version 3) is used to receive mail. Since your boss can send email, this is not likely to be the cause.
SSL (Secure Socket Layer) is used by Web browsers to establish secure connections. It is not a mail protocol.
POTS is an acronym for Plain Old Telephone Service. It is not a protocol.
