I'm going to Camp Certify next week so I'll get back to you when I'm done
the 20th.

Go to a casino instead. If you're going to waste money, at least be
entertained.

Why exactly is this a waste of money? I mean you have know idea what this
guy's background is. For instance the only reason I'm going to a boot camp
is to get my cert quick. I don't have the time to study the books at night,
so taking two weeks and getting the cert is worth $$$ to me. I've been
supporting 5 MCSEs for the past year and I definitely know more than they
do about NT/2000. In general, the boot camps have a purpose and if used
correctly are extremely valuable.
So you tell me, where am I wasting my money?

Either he's experienced, and therefore knows the material and needs only
a little review, such as cramsession.com, or he's trying to become a
paper MCSE without experience or knowledge. Either way, a boot camp
is a waste of a few thousand dollars.

From your description, you fit the former.

I agree that in general these test can be passed fairly easily with enough
study/review. Yet, when I go to a boot camp I am virtually guaranteed to
get my MCSE in two weeks. The boot camp I'm going to has you take the tests
during the camp and pays for one re-take per test. How do you lose? I
think paying $4k-$5k is worth it just to get it done.
While I agree being a paper MCSE is a bad thing when in the workforce. It's
a great way to at least have your resume seen if you don't have any
experience.

I bet your employer is footing the bill. If it was coming out of your own
pocket would you still think the $4 - 5k is worth it?

I'm paying out of my pocket. I think that the value of the MCSE is
significantly greater than $5k, so it's a bargain. If you pay less and get
it done, great. For my money getting it done quickly without hassle is
worth the price of a boot camp.

In that case, I sincerely wish you good luck in finding a quality
training center.

Re: MCSE Bootcamp Reviews
Keep in mind that the only real guarantee a bootcamp can make is to take
your money. Period. No camp will refund your money but rather, will offer
you a seat in some future class (space available, of course). If you don't
like to read at night forget it. A lot of bootcamps will send out a stack of
books that you will have to read before you even show up for the first day.
Sixteen hour workdays are the norm at camp. Class may only last eight but
your readings/labs will take up the other 8. If you have real NT experience
this won't bother you much. If you haven't had any experience taking the MS
tests you'll be in for a real surprise. And the pressure ? Face it, you'll
have a lot of money riding on these tests. If you fail the first test it
will affect how you take the remaining tests. Your desperation and
frustration will start to gnaw at you. Take a few MS tests before camp, even
if you fail them. Learn to control your emotions and pace yourself. Focus on
each question equally well, that last question could be the one that puts
you in the PASS zone.
Lets assume you finish the camp and pass all the tests. Now the real funs
starts. If you manage to get an interview with the cert on your resume you
have to actually survive the interview. Smart hiring managers are now
looking at the Microsoft transcripts and checking for all cert tests being
passed in 1-3 days. That sends up an immediate red flag. You can bet the
technical interview will be extra thorough. If it's been a few months since
your tests you'll probably forget a lot of the material. If you don't have
everyday NT experience you'll probably not get the job. Right now the
industry is the worst I've seen on 20 years. Entry and junior levels spots
are rare. Senior level is hanging on fairly well.
My advice is if your company isn't covering the cost for the camp, forget
it. Take the slower path and either take some courses at a local community
college or do self-study. Take a test every 2-3 months and you'll have your
cert
at a much lower cost and the material will stay fresh in your mind a lot
longer.
