486
Anyone have a solution that will allow me to install linux 6.2 on this box.
Netsever 486 /LF intergrated AIC 7770 onboard. I keep getting the error
panic in kernel and I cant install. Hardware compatabiliy list states this
system is supported. If you have a solution please reply with step by step
instructions.
Thanks in advance.

Yes, kernel panic, but what does it exactly say about it? It can't
do... what?

Linux 6.2? I think you are refering to the distro - which one? A lot
of distros are compiled to support a minimum of a Pentium (Mandrake is
one I think?).
The hardware may be supported, but if the distro is setup with compiled
binaries that don't support a 486 or lower, it won't (well, most likely
won't) run.
Step by step instructions: Install a distro that supports a 486.
Slackware will work for a 386 and up. Other's can mention other
available distros.

Dump your RedHat distribution and get Slackware. The latter will install on
even a 386 "straight out of the box."

I could not agree more. However i see no mention of Redhat in the header
or in the mail itself.

Yes it "might" on the otherhand lets say this, it depends on how much
memory is presant in the 486, yes slackware will install with memory as
low as 4 MB however one "must" read LOWMEM.TXT beforehand.
If one has 16MB or even as low as 12MB resident then installation of
slackware should pose little if no problems.
Having said that, if "running" X comes into the it then even 32Mb
would be a squeze.
To address the gentelmens problem directly, just what was the "Kernel
Panic" message.???
Is one using the correct boot image, the man says i am trying to install
"Linux 6.2" there is no such thing as Linux-6.2, it maybe redhat 6.2 or
mandrake 6.2 but NOT linux-6.2.
One must remember that distro's like Mandrake now have a kernel as
default that will only boot a 586 and higher, if i am not mistaken Redhat
has the same as a default.
If the gentelman concerned would please explain peroperly what he is
trying to install (which distro) and "exachtly" what the error message(s)
are then i am sure we could all help him more.

"6.2" sounded to me like a RH distribution version number....

I managed to run netscape under X on a 16Mb 386SX33 once. It was definently
slow and definently swapping. Almost nothing else was running (kernel
processes, klogd, and syslogd were about it).
