Go Cisco
Go CISCO !! I mean, it is the Cisco Test you want to take, so the curriculum from Cisco is the best to study.

For all my M$ exams I used and I'm currently using more than one books and I plan to do the same thing when I start with CCNA. A friend of mine who passed the CCNA exam not long ago, told me that he used both Cisco(by Wendell Odom) and Sybex(by Todd Lammle) books and he hasn't got any problems with the material understanding. Similarly like you, he started with basic level of network knowledge. So, if you're a newbie in the Cisco world get yourself two books.
just my $0.02

But if you're going to buy just one book, I recommend you the Cisco one. I've heard good things for it.

Sybex or Cisco
I've used both Sybex and Cisco books in studying for CCNA and CCNP level exams. I'll tell you the big difference: editing. The Cisco books have many more editing errors than the Sybex books. I've seen words left out, examples mixed up, and even things that were just plain wrong. However, the information is complete and correct. As long as you are keeping up with the information, you will notice the errors immediately, correct it in your mind and move on.

As a graduate of Cisco Networking Academy, I have to agree with your analysis of the editing problem in the Cisco Press books. The erata on the web site is a good source of information, however. At the time I was in semester 3, not all corrections had been posted to the erata listing for 2nd year companion book.
If you enroll in an Cisco approved academy, you will have access to the netacad section of Cisco. This is usually more correct and easier to study than the books.
The Sybex book by Lammle is another good source for valuable info.
Hope this helps!

Sybex makes just as many errors. Sometimes I do wonder about the Cisco Press editors, I mean they ARE CCIE's. A lot of errors could be found by just a CCNA. Go with Cisco Press anyways though.
