simple DNS problem: how to configure to resolve a domain name

Xref: nntp3.aus1.giganews.com alt.certification.mcse:170797

I can set a Microsoft DNS server to resolve a fully qualified domain name,
e.g. comp1.domain.cxm
But I do not know how to configure so that the DNS server can resolve its
domain name, e.g. domain.cxm

i.e. I can ping "comp1.domain.cxm" but not "domain.cxm"
Would anyone help me? Thanks.
P.S. The DNS server is on Microsoft Windows 2000 platform
