Angry Something terribly wrong

I am getting very frustrated with the New Riders 70-217 book. It seems to me that the 'step by step' guides in the book...miss steps!
"Am I running a different version of Server?" I ask myself as I follow the steps and come across screens not mentioned.
It seems to work backwards...Chapter 2 says install DNS then install AD...Chapter 3 tells you how to install AD..."Didn't I already do that??"

My point is...I am stuck..again, and not doing very well with the exercises, and not progressing very far in the book as I should have this much time on.

A simple procedure as adding a 2nd domain controller is frustrating me as it will not work. Can ANYONE please help :

My setup : 2 PC's running server. 1 is DC and running DNS. Try to add 2nd DC on other PC using DCPROMO. Use ADmin account that is in Domain Admin Group.
Consistantly get the following error:

quote:

Active Directory Installation Failed.

The operation failed because:
The Directory Service failed to create the server object for CN=NTDS Settings,CN=MCSE2,CN=Servers,C
N=Default-First-Site- Name,CN=Sites,CN=Configuration
,DC=W2KBrewing,DC=com on server mcse1. Please ensure the network credentials provided have sufficiant access to add a replica.

"A Service Principal Name (SPM) could not be constructed because the provided hostname is not in the necessary format."

Please anyone?? I have exam in 2 weeks and nothing seems to work with the exercises in the book. I have clean installs of the OS....bleat bleat vleat.
Appreciated.

I'm searching Microsoft Knowledge base right now, but not a direct hit yet. Did you have good connectivity. It really sounds like a DNS problem. Your book is right though, it seems to work better when your DNS infrastructure is running good. Installing and Connecting a Windows 2000 Professional Workstation
Step-by-Step Guide to Setting up Additional Domain Controllers
These two should cover the basics... hope it helps...

Thanks Jeff for that. I appreciate it. The links were helpful but didn't really explain what the problem was.
I ended up fixing the problem the cheats way...Reinstalling Server on both PC's and reinistalling DNS and Domain. It worked fine.
I would still be interested in knowing this resolution if anyone else has come across this before. All very well formatting and re-installing everything on home PC's for studying, but that solution won't work very well in a live environment.
Thanks again.

If they were both fresh builds on your previous attempt, that is very perplexing indeed. The symptom you listed seemed to indicate that DNS failed, or you did not have the correct level of access, or there was a record of this second computer already in the database from a previous time.

Again, I did search the Knowledge Base and did not get a direct hit. But make sure to check out those 'Step by Step' and 'How To' guides on Microsoft Technet. They are a great supplement to your studies. What I found usefull for my studies, was to print the course outline and objectives from the Microsoft Traincert site and correlate those to the Step by Step and How To guides. That way I had specific labs to execute for each exam. Good Luck and don't let it get to you. If I had a nickel for every time I had to reload one of my lab machines....
